Just Pizza

Pizza is one of my favorite foods as long as it is from one of my favorite pizza joints.
Share your favorite pizza joints and anything pizza here.

My two favorite pizza joints are:

1. Delfina - San Francisco

2. Amici's - San Francisco

3. Upper Crust - Boston

I could eat pizza everyday for a week and never tire of it. I prefer just cheese but have been known to put down a few slices of pepperoni!
For homemade pizza, I like to use Trader Joe pizza dough baked on a Pampered Chef pizza stone topped with goat cheese, mushrooms and greek olives.

Re: Just Pizza

Oh man having worked in the pizza field for the betetr part of my adult life, I could chat for days about pizza *lol*
My husband's favorite pizza I make at home: well, I should say "assemble" at home. I don't make my own crst or sauce unless I'm getting paid for it

Boboli(sp?) pizza crust. (I use the whole wheat thin crust)
Top it with Alfredo sauce (I use 5 brothers or Bertolli)
On top of that put:
Baby spinach leaves that have been very quickly blanched and then drained very well.
Chopped broccoli
Bonless skinless chicken breast cut into bite sized pieces
Fresh asparagus that has been chopped into bite sized pieces and lightly steamed for 2 or 3 minutes.

Then once it is heavily piled up with all of those goodies, spinkle the top with a little Sargento shredded mixed cheese. I believe we use what is called the Itallian mix? It's got Parm, Mozz, Prov, Romano, Asiago and something else.

Anyway, once it's HEAPED up and sprinkled on, cook it in the oven at 450 or whatever till the chicken is cooked (about 15 minutes) then take it out, and let it rest for another couple of minutes.

Mmmmm, that sounds delicious.

Here's a great crust recipe that you can make in your bread machine.

Garlic Lover's Pizza Crust

6 fluid ounces lukewarm water
2 T olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups bread flour
1 tsp. white sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. active dry yeast

Place the ingredients into the pan of a bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select dough cycle.
when machine signals, remove the dough and knead into a tight ball on a lightly floured surface. Let rest for about 15 minutes.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Stretch the dough out to fit your desired pizza pan. Let rise for about 20 minutes for a thicker crust.
Top with desired toppings and bake for 10 to 20 minutes or until crust is lightly browned on bottom.

Re: Just Pizza

I grew up eating the Chef Boyardee cheese pizza kits -- they come with a packet of dough, which you mix with water and let rise, and sauce and parmesan, the rest is up to you. That was about the first thing I learned to cook. And it's still a go-to comfort food for me.

But lately I love making a "white" sort of pizza, with olive oil and garlic as the sauce, then chopped spinach and fresh basil, perhaps some chicken, some red pepper slices, feta and mozzarella cheese.

Re: Just Pizza

I love pizza, too. For me, pizza is best at a crappy, greasy spoon sort of pizza joint. Same with burgers. I don't like 'fancy' pizzas with white sauce or no sauce and toppings like string beans. I like old fashioned pizza with lots of spicy tomato sauce cooked in an oven that has been used for 75 years and rarely gets cleaned. LOL!

If you are into that kind of pizza, the best pizza I've ever had is at a place called "Red's Savoy Inn' in St. Paul MN. It's a total dive and the wait is quite long but if you are ever in that area for some reason it is worth the wait to get one of their pies. MMMMMMMM.

Re: Just Pizza

My Sicilian mother-in-law makes the best pizza. It has no sauce, a little oil and is heaped with caramelized onions and sometimes a little pancetta or prosciutto.

For the pizza lovers in NY, I heard on the news that a guy named Scott does a tour of the best pizzarias in the city. Sounds like fun.

Re: Just Pizza

DR, that sounds wonderful. I love pizza, but I can't use a traditional tomato sauce as I am allergic to tomatoes (well, anything citrus)

My favorite pizza at the moment is either a feta, spinach onion one I make myself or the Papa John's spinach Alfredo pizza - Good Eats!

Re: Just Pizza

I've managed a few pizza joints in my time. My favorite pizza of all time is here in Columbus. Adriatico's down by OSU. New York style, thick crust. Here's a review:
Adriatico's New York Style - Columbus, OH, 43201-2356 - Citysearch
Quote:
The Scene
Tucked in on the corner of Neil and 11th, this little campus joint hides in the shadows of OSU's freshman dorm towers. Over dinner, moms and dads can peer up to room 410 and see the real reason first-year Timmy is failing Math 151. The crowd looks more like pizza connoisseurs than dude-spillover from the towers. Profs and their grad students dine over pizza and beer, while nearby Victorian Village provides a steady flow of loyal neighborhood customers.

The Food
Opt for the thick crust and enjoy the oily, well seasoned, foccacia-like dough. The sauce is rich but even, with hints of sweet roasted garlic. You may find a cheaper pizza on campus, but it won't be half as good. Adriaticos also offers the requisite independent pizza shop fare like calzones, subs and salads. So sit back, relax and reminisce about the days before Pepsi and McDonalds joined the pizza business.

Re: Just Pizza

There is nothing like the smell when you first walk into a pizza joint.

I like most kinds of pizzas, but one of my favorites is at a place here called Gambino's. It's a white pizza, with chicken, mushrooms, bacon and red onions. My other favorite is the California Club at California Pizza Kitchen:

Quote:
Applewood smoked bacon, grilled chicken and Mozzarella cheese, hearth baked then topped with Roma tomatoes, chilled chopped lettuce tossed in mayonnaise and fresh sliced avocado.

Re: Just Pizza

All this talk about pizza has me craving my favorite pizza here in town: ZELDA'S GOURMET PIZZA - SACRAMENTO CALIFORNIA. It's an institution in this city. Their deep dish pizza is to die for. I might have to call in an order tomorrow and pick a pie up on my way home from work!

Lucy - we made that same pizza when I was growing up too! I still love it, although you can't find that kit any more. We moved over to the Pillsbury can of crust that you stretch out. It's still good, but not quite the same.

Trader Joe's has pizza dough that they sell for a great price. My cousin has two boys who want pizza at least 5 times a week and that's really economical for her.
