    OK, here's my crazy answer.

    1 cup = 8oz.

    14.5 oz can tomatoes does that include the liquid ...if you drain it you probably get a full cup+ depending on the brand

    I think I would start with 1 tomato and dice it up in a measuring cup if its not enough, which winter tomatoes are usually drier than summer tomatoes, add another.

    Thanks, inthegarden; I was thinking about 1 cup, also. I am probably going to have to break down and get to the grocer b/c I don't even have that many fresh tomatoes on hand....maybe 2.

    I would say add them until it "eyeballs" right, to you! With most recipes, it just depends on what I like. Nothing ever seems to stay the same. If you're a "tomatohead", go slightly less than crazy?

    I'm looking forward to making a nice big pot of white beans at the end of the week, when the temp visits the upper teens-low 20s. It's going to be near 70 today! Stoooopid weather. I think we've got another summer-from-hell coming.

    Thanks, FM. It's currently around 40 degrees F here...lots warmer than last week's frigid weather. Still, I've had a hankering for beef barley soup for quite some time.
