I'm with you there, I can't stand guacamole (or avocados in general). Saves me money when I go to TdM or Chipotle, because they charge extra for guac.
Guacamole is not so bad? It all depends on what you eat it with. I'm Caribbean and we actually call Avocados pear in the English speaking islands. We don't crush it, or puree it into anything. We simply peel off the skin and eat as like a fruit. With rice or with a specially friend spicy escoveech fish. Try it one day if you ever hit a Caribbean restaurant or visit an island like Jamaica. Its yummy, but you have to try it to see what I'm talking about.
We had neighbors from Haiti that called then butter pears
We used to have an awesome Caribbean restaurant here that I just fell in love with. The couple that owned it were Jamaican, very friendly, and the food was incredible. I still crave their plantains and a spicy fish dish they had. Bob Marley's music was always playing in the background. :lol
Unfortunately, this town seems terrified of trying anything new and they closed after a year. If it's not a boring, bland chain restaurant, it doesn't tend to do well here. It's a shame.
Now I'm craving plantains. Sigh.
We have plenty of Caribbean restaurants here in Toronto. There was an article in the Star this weekend giving a nutritional account of the jerk chicken dinner they serve at The Real Jerk (my local-ish) and yikes! The sodium count in that meal alone was something along the lines of four times the daily allowance. I'm just glad they didn't give the info for the goat roti, my favourite - I don't want to be thinking about such things while I partake.
Wayward, I can buy plantains in the grocery store. And they are easy to fix.
Let the skin get black. They aren't ripe until then.
Slice them and saute in a little butter.
I add some brown sugar, a pinch of salt abd cinnimon.
They don't take long to cook if very ripe.
Since I am allergic to bananas, does this mean that I should avoid plantains, too?
I would, just to be safe; a plantain is about like a banana with less sugar!
My husband recently started a blog with a food-and-wine theme: My Tummy Is Telling Me "Enough!"
The emphasis is on not-too-difficult healthy cooking that's tasty and creative. Check it out!
BTW, the title, "My Tummy is Telling Me 'Enough!'" comes from when he made something really good, and he asked me if I wanted any more. It was yummy, but I couldn't eat another bite -- so I responded, "My head is saying 'yes,' but my tummy is telling me 'enough!'"
