I was throwing out a stack of old Prevention magazines yesterday and one caught my eye about what to eat to avoid the flu. Shellfish (clams, lobster, etc), lots of black tea, dairy, and protein is the short answer.

Yea -- if fish has a fishy smell, it's not fresh.

Eww you guys are making me feel really ANTI-fish. Shark sounds really icky. I'm more about texture.

The diabetic educator said I didn't have to eat it. The goal was for lean sources of protien and then a fish oil capsule. I can handle that. I'd rather eat fake meat than fish. TVP or something like that.

It's not the fishy smell, it's that it has a fishy taste. Too fishy.

I really like shark meat. It has a firm texture, much like fresh tuna and the taste is mild

I've never worked with TVP on its own, but you need to try Smart Ground. It's a faux ground meat that can be used for pastas, burritos, tacos-anywhere that ground meat normally would be used. I think the same company also makes Gimme Lean (a play on Jimmy Dean), which is a tube-form sausage (cut it to make patties). Boca burgers are great-what I have been doing is having a Kaiser roll, a Boca patty, a couple veggies (lettuce, tomatoes, mushrooms if we have them), and then a dollop of Trader Joe's bruschetta.

I think it's Morning Star that makes a really, really good fake chicken pattie. I'm pretty sure it's veggie.

Thresher Shark is the best. Rub with a little cajun spice and throw it in a pan with butter. I haven't had it in years. Most sharks are on the Seafood Watch list though.

Thanks Shay and Trista. I'll try them all. Where in the grocery would I find Smart Ground? and are Bocca burgers found in the frozen food section? I did try morning star veggie burgers and they were pretty good.

I've been buying ground chicken at the store and using it to make chili and meatballs and burgers. I like it much better than ground turkey.

Livin, thanks for the oatmeal tips. It worked out really well for all of us (including Waldo who apparantly ate the leftovers someone left in their bowl on the coffee table). But it was nice not to have to make breakfast when we got up. It was already ready.
