Sounds wonderful, closetnerd. I'm glad the experience lived up to your expectations. And by Pittsburgh style do you mean rare on the inside and kind of burnt on the outside?

I had to look for a recipe for that beef! I had something similar in Tahoe and have not been able to replicate it but this recipe sounds similar.

Yes, The inside is actually still cool and the outside is sort of burnt.

We're anxious to check out some restaurants this weekend now that Nebraska passed the new law that has made all restaurants and bars smoke-free as of June 1. It will be nice not smelling like smoke when we come home.

Trust me, it will be so nice. Washington State has been smoke-free in all public places (no smoking inside or within 25 feet of the entrance) since either 05 or 06, and I love it. Being that I am terribly allergic to smoke (my skin starts to break out), it is nice. The only exceptions are private residences and then tribal casinos/lands, because they are sovereign lands.

I was tickled to death when they passed that law here. I no longer come home from work reeking of tobacco. I also have to say that it has a negligible effect on our company sales once it was enacted state wide. When it was done city by city the location I managed was in a township which was unable to pass a smoke free regulation and we got all the smokers. Since then it has leveled out for all of our locations. And yes I smoked for 32 years before quitting. On a side note it took a few weeks of good cleaning to get the smell out the smoking section. Funny thing is we had smokers who would still only sit in the old smoking section.

Old habits are hard to break I guess. I'm happy to hear that it hasn't affected your sales, Unklescott. That was the excuse used to try to fight the legislation in Iowa, but it still passed. There are a couple of bars that are still trying to hold out, letting their patrons smoke but once the state threatened to withhold their liquor license they backed down. I think there's a lawsuit going because Iowa still allows smoking in casinos. And not just those run on Indian Reservations.

The problem I have is that now I'm working part time at a restaurant and several times during the shift I'll wonder where the other server is and she's outside smoking. As a non-smoker, I don't get the same amount of breaks as the smokers do. BUT, that has nothing to do with the law. That's just poor management.

Take a smoke break. Nothing says you have to actually be out here smoking.

    Re: Restaurants

Here in California, the restaurants, bars, clubs went smoke-free shortly after I moved here, around 20 years ago. Everyone was yammerin' that business was going to go way down and they'd all go bankrupt. However, it was just the opposite -- business soared! Now, even some of the Native American casinos are adding separate smoke-free buildings to their complexes.
