Re: 10/16 - Episode Discussion - "Junkyard Cyborg" - *spoilers*

I'm SMH at how Nicole has come back and mixed things up.

Yep, this DOES take things up at LEAST a notch or two or three, because until Nicole's return, I was figuring Laura, Roy, Rod and Derek for F4.

Well, Rod blew himself out of the water by being hardheaded. He HAD the goods (self-taught, or not). But absolutely could/would not break himself out of that round-faced mold he'd placed himself into.

Derek, ITA, is ALL OVER THE PLACE. Like Rod, he's got the goods, but HIS problem is consistency.

Roy. I think it's more than safe to say he's on the bubble. And no, I don't think hardheadedness is the particular cross that he's bearing. Good as he is, if he can't downscale and downsize what it is he does every week, yep, I DO think he's a goner. Why he can't just figure out that for at least ONE challenge, he could and should reward himself by actually NOT working like a Hebrew slave, I'll never know. And I don't think Glenn COULD'VE made the panel's position ANY clearer.

So, much as I'd like to see him as one of the F2, I won't lose any sleep over it if he blows himself out of the water, either.

Laura. OK. Bad challenge. She's had her major screw-up, so, hopefully, it's onward and upward from here.

Nicole. There are, what? Two? Three challenges 'til the finale? If she keeps going like she HAS been the past two challenges, she just may be sitting at the top of the heap when the smoke clears, maybe. That kind of work, the quality, imagination, execution, etc., AFTER going out, CANNOT be ignored, I think.

    We shall see.

Yes. Lil of Survivor. She was booted off a while back but came back and made it to Final 2. She lost to Sarah. Also recently there was Josh of Master Chef who beat top contenders Frank and Becky but eventually lost to Christine in the finale.

I like Derek and Laura. I thought one of them is going to win it. Nicole is making a strong comeback. This was Laura's worst creation to date. Not sure what happened and why she didn't stick to just one concept instead. Though he's the best fabricator in the group, Roy will be gone next week.

I especially like Derek's Cyborg creation. I think he's the one who made the best use of all the materials in the junkyard. But if the main criterion is to create both a mechanical and human nature to the cyborg then I can understand why Nicole won over him.

Sarah really shouldn't have used her Mennonite excuse this week as she told someone that the only movies she had watched in the genre were the Terminator movies. And, duh...the producer was sitting in judgement this week.

I scowled when Nicole worked her way back in. Her designs were so lackadaisical when she left. However, now all I do is smile and hope she makes it to the end. Her explanation was lame, but she probably meant it, in that before she tried to please the judges and now she pleases herself.

I think her (agreed) somewhat lame answer makes some sense given her age and probable inexperience. She was feeling overwhelmed by the competition and the caliber of the judges. Then when the worst happened - both the hideous makeup and the expulsion, she realized she wasn't being true to her design esthetic (sp?). Once that weight was lifted she came back with this raw determination to show everyone she could do great stuff.

I am simply amazed at Nicole's level of sculpting, but also the sheer beauty of her last 2 creations. She incorporates a lovely feminity without sacrificing edge and grittiness.

Laura has it too, but not in this last challenge. My favorite of Laura's was the team car challenge - her superhero was stunning, should have won except for Tommy's mess of a sidekick.

I agree with your assessments, jammyjoe. Most of all and apropos of nothing, thank you for making me smile by correctly using the singular form, "criterion," instead of the plural form, "criteria."

I'm liking Roy, Derek, & Laura... they seem to be a level above the rest.

I really liked Rodd but I know that he was too hard-headed. Still, his work reminds me of Sid and Marty Krofft. There was a familiarity to all of the characters that they created and they may have received the same type of criticism that Rodd received from these judges. I could see him doing a show in a style similar to theirs.

I was unable to see the episode last week but have looked at the photos.

    Will say these few things:

Laura's not her best work, but it was a hiccup.

Roy's was good but he put TOO much on as people mention. Had he taken at least half the arm pieces off and let that makeup face shine... he'd been much better there.

Derek had a nice upswing, but a bit too much metal on the cyborg.

Nicole - WOW, this is the first time I wouldn't be upset of someone came back after being eliminated. She did have a bad Alice yes, but even I admit looking on that Tommy should've been ousted that week anyway, so she's proven she shouldn't have been eliminated at all (so far).

Sarah - less said the better. Her case though, too little makeup.
