I'm going to say something that I think may be unpopular, but it's been on my mind for a long time. There is a strong anti Ballas-Hough sentiment here, which I sort of get because Derek is an over the top ham and Mark over dances and makes his partners look bad at times. But.....
Derek in my opinion is the best male dancer on the show, and a brilliant choreographer. He is hard not to watch in a group dance.
Julliane when she was around was probably the best female dancer. I may have a crush on Kym, and Cheryl is a great teacher, but Julliane was blessed with so much talent. Again, stood out in a crowd of great dancers.
Mark's record speaks for itself. He is the son of Corky, who trained this mob and created the dynasty.
I respect quality and hard work, so if a Ballas or a Hough wins again, I think it's just proof that they are darn good dancers and instructors.
He won twice with two Olympians who were going to win no matter what. He had Sabrina who should have been in the final 3 but did not even make it past the half way point. Kim left after a couple of weeks and Melissa is just popular despite her poor dancing. The Houghs wins I can deal with because at least I can see the talent and work. The Ballas wins just seem like gifts from the producers to thank Corky or something. Besides, something about Mark annoys more than Derek and Julianne. It is not just the crazy dancing but thinking he is the star.

Derek, Julianne, and Mark are all fabulous dancers who are fantastic at what they do and are a joy to watch. They have also all had their turns at winning - twice. It is somebody else's turn.... Next!

I don't mind Derek and Julianne dancing. Something about Julianne rubbed me the wrong way during season 7. And week 1 I didn't even notice she was gone. But now? Maybe it's the lackluster season, but I have to say, I miss her. And I've already commented that Derek's dancing is so good you can't turn away. I could care less who his partner is or whether they're dancing, I just like watching him. But it's the after dance antics that have gotten annoying. However, it's nothing compared to Mark. While he's dancing and after. I posted in the media thread his girlfriend wants to do the show (her name is Joanna Pacitti, a singer and AI contestant who was disqualified last season-I think for having some friendship with a person on the staff? ) Mark doesn't seem to take criticism well anymore. I heard he attacked people on twitter that were critical of Joanna, so I can't imagine how well he'd do if the judges didn't like her or if she wasn't a fan favorite.

It's funny, Karalott, that I too have to keep a list of contestants next to my computer to avoid forgetting half of them.
But I remember some people even if they aren't the greatest dancers, and I'm excited when it's their turn and disappointed when they aren't that good.
I'm thinking now of Michael Irvin, who a buddy of mine close to the show told me is the friendliest of the bunch...an upbeat person, the one who is friends with everybody, and actually happy to be there. That guy smiles all the time.
He's probably the worst dancer, and will be going home soon - and that's fair and it's the nature of sports, but I think he'll be missed in the Red Room.
Can you imagine a final of Aaron, Mya and Joanna? It won't happen but they'd have to bring in a SWAT team to keep them apart, put canaries in their dressing rooms to detect poison gas, and have a priest on hand to administer Last Rites in case one went over the wall.
I tend to forget Melissa as well, though she has a memorable (not in a good way) dance partner, so I usually remember her eventually.

A different attitude is expected? I can't imagine why. There are a great many local and regional dance competitions, and even national ones, where amateurs are a major part of the landscape, amateurs without the dance and showmanship skills of Giles or Kristi. These are the feeding grounds for future professionals, and I find them very entertaining in ballroom competition.

If it is the fan base who determines what is expected, then ABC seems not to have delivered a cast (pro and celeb) able to deliver the required entertainment attitude, given the poor ratings sdl has previously discussed. Maybe I should just watch dancing on PBS and shut up here.
I don't know what caliber of "entertainment attitude" you're expecting from a show on which anyone from the cat lady down the block to Joe Sixpack and everyone in between is able to cast a vote. Most of the people watching can't tell a feuillette from a fleckerl so they're not going to be slo-moing Mya's Waltz or whatever to nitpick the footwork and vote based on whatever they find. They're going to vote based on who they like and who looks to be dancing well to them.

The celebs are all for the most part just barely famous third tier people who get paid to shake their asses on TV, learn a few dances and make sure you stay glued to your TV for 2 hours every Monday so you can soak in a few commercials between the Cha Cha and the Paso. It's just reality TV, pretty much along the lines of all reality TV. There's no million dollar contract at the end, there's not even a discernible prize aside from a cheesy mirror ball and there's no dancing career waiting around the corner for any of the celebs and even if there were, that's not why they're here. It's really not that deep.

To me, that doesn't matter. Corky didn't leave a good impression on me when he was on season 7, and I hope he doesn't return in any form. Mark just annoys with his sour grapes when he doesn't get the scores he wants (or apparently thinks he's earned) and, as I mentioned, his way OTT mugging and antics. I'm not going to base my opinion of them because of whatever history, awards, or rankings they have. I think Derek is a fine dancer, probably the best male pro on the show. But I prefer Maks, Tony, Louis, and Jonathan first. And, this is all opinion, but I feel like there's favoritism when it comes to those 3. I'm ready for some of the other veteran pros of the show to finally get their due.

Can you imagine a final of Aaron, Mya and Joanna? It won't happen but they'd have to bring in a SWAT team to keep them apart, put canaries in their dressing rooms to detect poison gas, and have a priest on hand to administer Last Rites in case one went over the wall.
I never finished my thought here, but just the idea of Aaron in the final 3, even with my faves Donny, Kelly, or Louie, would be enough for me to scream bloody murder. If Michael gets past these next two weeks, I'd be very afraid of his fan base. I don't think he will, but he's as good as gone if he's in the dance off. I don't care who he's against.

I'm in the "Love Derek" crowd--but Mark B also rubs me the wrong way--and i don't know why. I spend most of his dances trying to figure out why I don't like him as a performer.

I can usually figure these things out.

Not this time....

I'd appreciate any help with figuring this out.

I like Corky. He had to be a bit of a ham to keep up with Cloris and to keep her in the competition. Anything serious and she would have been gone much sooner. I laughed through all of their dances. Not good dancing, but it was great entertainment. Especially when she waved a fart and flipped her wig... I'd like to see him with a serious, talented star. Just to see how he does.

I'm on the Hough love train. Julianne is a beautiful dancer. When she danced with Tony to Rascal Flatts (last season?), it brought tears to my eyes. She's just a joy to watch.
I hate when the cops throw me in the back of the squad car ....like they didnít hear me call shotgun.

Personally, I love the "Wonder Triplets". I think they are all incredibly talented and deserve every win they have achieved. Of the 3 Derek is my fave, he is just an amazing dancer and choreographer.

Of course I'm biased, because Corky and Shirley Ballas were my all time fave Latin dance champions. They done good with the kids.

I don't know how to quote 2-3 people at once but on the Ballas thing:
1) I agree that Mark is the most annoying guy on the show, but I try not to penalize the "star" because of the pro. Not like MJH needs any help.
2) I think he did a great job with Kristi Yamaguci, who was the best dancer but not the fan favorite. To beat Jason Taylor and Cristian de la Fuente was an accomplishment, but it does seem to have gone to his head.
3) Mark's girlfriend is that girl who was kicked off American Idol when they learned that she had been a pro with a recording contract for a long time. What is it with this incestuous deal between reality TV people?
4) Honestly, I'm just surprised that these male dancers are viewed as sex symbols, most all of them racking up hot love interests. I've always wondered if ABC tries to limit the number of gay pros in order to amp up the sexual chemistry - this can't be reflective of the actual dance community, or is it?
5) I would like to see Corky Ballas cast with a real person who doesn't fart, throw off her wig, or wander away, so we could see what he can do.

From Tom's own mouth-Cloris wasn't originally going to throw her wig off. Corky was going to have it attached in between his legs and have Cloris rip it off from there. Obviously ABC vetoed the idea. What scared me is Corky hammed it up more than Mark. I thought their dances were a laughingstock and kind of gross, and way overscored considering they penalized the others who could and were actually trying. I liked Mark during his first season with Sabrina. But with Kristi came the guppy face poses and the overacting with the facial expressions and dancing. At least in Kristi's case it didn't look too obvious that he was outdancing her. But I agree, since then Mark let that go to his head.
