Re: Ralph Macchio & Karina Smirnoff - Season 12

I think more along the lines of, if Karina ever has kids, what it'll be like that their friends will be able to google her and say they saw her naked. However, Karina's a grown woman, and it's her decision, and I don't hold it against her. It's great we live in a society where we're free to make whatever choices we want. For me personally, I wouldn't want my daughter posing nude for anything, even charity related, but if she was old enough to make the decision herself there wouldn't be much I could do. Hopefully she'd thought it all through, but I consider this simply along the lines of her wanting fame and glory. Maybe she's trying to market herself beyond DWTS and hope she gets gigs elsewhere.

Now, to talk about Ralph: I actually enjoyed his rumba this week. I know a lot of people thought he was rusty-and he was, not as good as the last two weeks. But in re-watching I enjoyed it more the second time around. I feel like the judges are really trying to make this the even playing field that the producers want because I feel like they've been a little too picky with him the last two weeks. The song choice inspired me to go find The Outsiders and watch it. It's been too long since I've seen that movie. I think the waltz is going to be a good choice for him this week. I've always thought Karina has come up with some really good ballroom choreography (as a choreographer I enjoy her routines as a whole).

I'm so disappointed. She has always been one of my favorite pros. Her energy & agility make me look forward to watching her dance, especially in the pro numbers on elimination night.

Now I'll just see her as a big disappointment.

Why do accomplished women feel the need to degrade themselves, as well as all other women, by allowing themselves to be demeaned & objectified that way? She's got to be making plenty of money between the show, other dancing gigs, & personal appearances. She can't need the money that bad.

This is one of my pet hates. The minute a woman proves herself admirable through her accomplishments, talents, brains, the skin rags immediately have to pull the old "I wonder what she looks like NAKED! Let's get her to strip down & show us! She's worth nothing but T & A, just like all women." They try to take away all personal accomplishment dignity & turn women into objects to be leered at.

In the end, it reflects on all of us. Women are looked on more & more as nothing more than cheap booty calls & a way for men to get their visual or physical jollies.

I'm sooooooo disappointed in Karina!!!!! I'll never admire her abilities again!

Wasn't that one of the reasons Maks and her didn't work out. She didn't want kids and instead wanted to become more famous?

I don't know, but the news about her posing for Playboy doesn't shock me.

This will be a hot topic leading up to Monday's show... when focus should be on Ralph and Karina's dance. The media is already having a field day.

In reading more about it, I think the issue isn't so much that Karina posed for Playboy that the show would have an issue with. It's more whether they knew about it and she got their permission. That might be a contract violation and the bigger picture. Now, if they try to play up the Disney brand and say she went as far as soiling the family image-yeah, that's BS. Especially considering that they've cast people famous solely for living with Hugh Hefner and someone from the show Jackass. The producers can go as far as dictating what interviews you can give throughout the season. They cancelled one Tom was supposed to do with TMZ. So I can understand their position if she went ahead and did something while the show was running and they weren't made aware of it. It works out good for the show, though, as this gets them publicity. Karina on the other hand we'll find out.

Karina has mentioned wanting to start a family a lot quicker with her fiance than she did with Maks. With him he was ready right then and there, while she said she wanted to wait and get married, maybe have things calm down. With Brad she's already talking like Maks used to. I heard rumors that was one of the things that might have led to their split: he was ready for a family, she was in love with the spotlight. I doubt that'll change. She'll lose me if she does get fired and hires Gloria Allred blaming discrimination.

Karina will also make out from this whole situation. Negative attention is still attention. Enough people will be interested to see what the big fuss is about and she'll get more popular.

As for the show, they don't have a leg to stand on here, except maybe conflict of interest/breach of contract. They played up Kendra's stripper life, and Bruno gets filthy with some of his comments.

I do think that Maks and Kirstie may have made a jab at her today when Kirstie tweeted full-frontal nudity promised on their episode of Oprah. LOL.

I think the show has a contract leg to stand on, but that's it. Trying to promote the family brand will do way more harm than good, and probably would bring a lawsuit in from Gloria Allred. They can't really say she's ruining a family show image, even if that's what DWTS is, with their line up of past contestants and having Hef in the audience. However, I'm not sure what it would make Karina look like if that happened, and what her fellow dancers would think of the whole thing. If she violated her contract and did this without telling them, then I can totally see their point. However, Karina may be doing this with the intention of the backlash and getting publicity from it. It'll sell the magazine I suppose. I'm more bothered by Hefner's comment. She may be out of her DWTS gig, maybe, but she probably will make out some how. And if all else fails, she has her fiance and his paycheck to fall back on. Now I'm waiting for the report to say even he didn't know about.

I'm with you. It's not so much that she wants to show her body to the world ... big deal... who cares. For me it's the whole issue of feeding the pervs that buy the mags and then prey on the rest of society in other forms. The guys that buy the mags aren't doing it to appreciate the body as an art form **gag**

I would expect the pros to have stipulations in their contracts that ABC must approve any additional media appearances they make just as a precaution to "protect the brand". (Playboy's probably fine but shooting a porno movie wouldn't be.) And if Karina violated this by not clearing it with ABC first, they have to come down on her if the contract is going to have any teeth for any other pro in the future, otherwise you set a precedent that it's all meaningless. I'm sure that's the gist of the brouhaha.

I just think that she and Maks, although they obviously had lots of "chemistry", were just not compatible emotionally, and Karina jumped into an engagement with him on the rebound from Mario Lopez, but was never fully committed, yet rather than be honest with Maks, continued to string him along for the publicity. I don't think Maks realized it until he had already invested a year in their relationship, and that's why he was so hurt and bitter about it. Apparently she does feel this Brad is "the one", and I expect she will marry him, but I also don't see her giving up the spotlight even if/when she has kids. I think Maks was looking for a more traditional arrangement than Brad is.

That's what I'm thinking. I know Joanna posed for Playboy during her stint (I remember it being released around the time she wound up getting voted off-many thought she did it as a ploy to gain more votes). But I doubt the pros and celebs, even though they all sign contracts, are held to the same standards. The pros are employed by ABC whereas the celebs rarely make an appearance after their season. If the show put the kabosh on Tom doing an interview with TMZ, then they may come down on Karina. I never felt like Karina was one of the staple pros the producers cared about, if season 10 is anything to go by. She may be a fantastic dancer and choreographer, but her pouting days and glaring at the judges are apparently over, as are any bad feelings between her and Maks by the looks of things this season. I haven't seen them interact or anything, but they both seem like they're on cloud 9. And they have plenty of reasons to be happy this season.

I hope this doesn't hurt Ralph, either, but I doubt it will. The average viewer who doesn't scope the show out online probably has no idea that Karina posed, and she's the pro. Ralph is such a sweetheart and hard not to root for.
