    Re: 10/26 Show Discussion **Spoilers**

I spoke with my friend the number cruncher this morning. Good news, bad news.
    1) The ratings for last night's show were pretty good, especially considering that the show was up against a World Series game (called for rain about halfway through). The rest of the lineup was terrible (reruns, etc.) so DWTS had about 20 million viewers in the second hour.
    2) Because, overall, viewership is down about 20% this year, DWTS time is available at bargain basement rates - around $250,000 per 30 second segment. That doesn't rank in the top 10 in rates charged, with AI charging over $650k per segment.
This is aggravated by the economy, which makes ad money flow less freely.
Last year, DWTS hiked its rates up over $400k per segment because of it's popularity and buzz.
    3) There are 10-15 minutes of commercials per hour, depending on how much they can sell. Programming works backwards - more commercials, less show. I haven't measured it on DVR, but I'm lead to believe that DWTS can't sell 15 minutes, even at cheaper rates.
    Difference:
    Last year: $400k X 30 segments per hour X 2 hours = $24 million per show
    This year: $250k X 22 segments per hour X 2 hours = $11 million per show
    Big difference.
    4) The real failure of DWTS has been the inability to get major corporate sponsors to pay anything close to what AI receives. Ever notice that Simon, Randy, Paula, and Kara all have Coke glasses in front of them? They don't all drink Coke. Nevertheless, you don't see this on DWTS.
Likewise, all the Idol kids singing in Ford commercials? Not on DWTS.
Both Ford and Coca-Cola pay about $35 million per season to AI for the privilege. Add on $35 million from AT&T for the text messaging deal. This is in addition to regular ad revenues for AI of about $40 million per show.
    See the problem?
    5) Why are there 16 couples? Besides the practical issues like injuries and broader appeal, which I've heard before but aren't the real reason - LONGER shows. They can fill up 2 hours per episode, ensuring maximum ad dollars.
So they'll have a large cast again next season.
The "stars" are paid an average of $250k per person per season - that's $4 million for all 16 for the entire season. About 1/3 of the revenue from ONE episode covers it.
So DWTS still does ok in terms of earnings, just not like it used to be and not so well vs. the competition.
Networks live off of their cash cows. Fox finances much of its programming with AI. ABC has been living off of DWTS and TB, among others.
With both DWTS and TB performing poorly, they are in trouble.

I'm also not thrilled that Joanna is apparently going to do her second splayout in Playboy magazine. Do we really need to have at least one porn-related contestant in every season? (no, we don't)
Playboy is porn? I respectfully disagree, as would several successive generations of male teenagers -- from behind the privacy of locked doors. You disparage our right of passage! Thank God for the First Amendment and the principles behind the 19th Amendment

sdl, in response to your earlier question about the sexual preference of male ballroom dancers, most of us, in my experience, are heterosexuals, if often flamboyantly so. We are the original metrosexuals.

After watching Joanna on this show, doesn't surprise me that she would try to further her "career" by posing in Playboy. Neither of her dances last night warrented the scores they gave her. I am really surprised that the judges would be pushing someone like her.

Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

Oops, you're right; I forgot about the articles, interviews and cartoons in that magazine.

OK, how about this instead? The whitewashing of one man's overindulgence in hedonism that led to fantastic financial success, is that better?
The Bachelor/Bachelorette series is a soap opera with unskilled actors, bad writing, and beautiful locations...it even edits the real moon!

Well, they had one of Hefner's multiple g/f's on a former season...I guess the other common denominators are silicone, other plastic surgery and bleach...

Thanks for reminding me of what I forgot to mention.

Playboy magazine is much closer to porn than it is to art, IMO.

I loved Joanna and Derek's waltz, as well as their mambo.

My fave Jitterbug was Mark/Lacey and Donny/Kym. Both fun and energetic. I was a bit disappointed with Kelly's, but I figure she was favoring the ankle and did not want to injure herself further.

I really like Kelly but she was not into the jitterbug at all last night.
She really has to start to let go and get into the dance.
    I do hope she stays.

I really loved Donny and Kim and the jitterbug is one of my favorite dances.

I know you young folks don't care for the dance but I am old so the jitterbug is what I grew up with and love that dance.

I also thought Lacey and her partner were good also.

I like Louie but think it is time for him to go along with Melissa

Really thought Derek and Joanna were good.

I was surprised Mya was really not into the jitterbug either tonight. They were good but to mild and the dance needed more action from them.

I don't think you have to defend your position with such vigor. The Playboy stock has lost 70% of its value since Oct, 2006 and Hef's property next to the Playboy mansion is for sale. You can easily coast to victory.

I could argue my opinion both intellectually and from a standpoint of law, but I'll endeavor to be equally colorful instead. Affirmation of the choices women make is not denial; but, rather, for "everyman," it is the ultimate discovery of universal truth.

If this in not now off-topic, I don't know what is.

PS, in my youth, I do recall looking at the cartoons.

Funny, and of course you know I was not referring to you. You've mentioned before your attraction to women. It doesn't really matter, but I was wondering and figured you could answer the question.
Frankly, one of the best reasons I could imagine to take up ballroom dancing is the close proximity to beautiful women. I guess I was hoping there were more gays - less competition!
