    Mad Hot Ballroom, etc.

I’m not sure where to post this, but this seems as good a place as any:

In between DWTS episodes, for those who have not seen the movie Mad Hot Ballroom (2005) a documentary, I implore you to do so. I had heard about it many times, and finally saw it a few months ago. It is simply wonderful!

    From allmovie.com:

Every year, the New York Public School system sponsors a dance competition for youngsters in fifth grade; in this contest, boys and girls ages 10 and 11 learn traditional ballroom dancing styles such as the fox trot, the rumba, and the tango, and then pit their skills against other students from around the Big Apple. Mad Hot Ballroom is a documentary which offers an inside look at this event, as well as the teachers and students who take part, with a particular emphasis on three schools: P.S. 112, in a Bensonhurst neighborhood dominated by Italian and Asian families; P.S. 150, located in the wealthy and fashionable Tribeca district; and P.S. 115, a Washington Heights school where the vast majority of families live below the poverty line. Filmmaker Marilyn Agrelo follows the young dancers as they gain confidence and skill and grow into "little ladies and gentlemen," as one teacher puts it, while also examining how cultural differences impact the competition for some students and how the boys and girls feel about the opposite sex as they begin to make friends with one another. Mad Hot Ballroom received a wildly enthusiastic world premiere at the 2005 Slamdance Film Festival.

Another good one is Take the Lead with Antonio Banderas

Lastly, I also enjoyed Shall We Dance? with Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere.

I saw Mad Hot Ballroom when it first came out. As a lover of ballroom dance and as a New Yorker, I loved the movie. More importantly, I really love this school program.

I hadn't heard of the documentary Mad Hot Ballroom, but it sounds like something I'd enjoy watching, if I can ever find it. I'll make a point to look for it, though. Thanks for the heads up, tango!

I saw Take The Lead, and I semi-enjoyed it. I finally saw Shall We Dance? about a month ago when it came out on tv here. I had no interest in watching it until then because I dislike Jennifer Lopez and she's such a horrible horrible actress that I figured it would be as bad as all of her other movies. But nothing better was on, so I caught it. I did not enjoy it at all, though, and indeed it was due to her horrific lack of acting ability. Well, that and the lack of a very believable script. She really just ruins any movie she's in, which is unfortunate. So that's not a movie I'll ever recommend, but hey... at least I tried.

Nemeses, I got Mat Hot Ballroom on DVD from the library. Watched it several times. **spoiler** there was a brief Kleenex scene - for me, anyway.

Ahhh, thanks tango, I hadn't thought about that. I'll check with our library and see if they have it.

Nemeses, it's available from both Blockbuster online and Netflix.

florimel, after I posted this thread I saw another older one about MHB, and I forgot that DWTS pro Charlotte Jorgensen was one of the judges at the end of the movie.

I can't help smiling every time I think about this film. Makes me want to check it out again. I even enjoy going to allmovie.com and looking at the cover photo. Too adorable!

Okay, note to self.... beware calling Blockbuster on the phone to ask about this documentary.

I just called a Blockbuster and asked if they had a film called Mad Hot Ballroom, and the guy there told me they don't have any porn films.

Thanks, Nemeses. I just choked on my coffee. Talk about knowing your stock.

Anyway, I checked again and I know Blockbuster has it both online and in several stores in my neighborhood. So, chances are it may be in yours, too.

Yeah, I actually did check with a few more Blockbusters and one of them does have it, though it's currently out, so I'll check with them again in a few days. I'm looking forward to watching it. Thanks again Florimel and tango for both the tips on where to find it.
