Damn. This guy has been through the ringer. He's an incredibly charming person ... seems so down to earth. I REALLY hope he is o.k.

Re: Bret Michaels suffers HUGE brain bleed. Critical Condition

There's a statement on his official site that says the previous reports about Bret's condition are not true. He is still in critical condition.

The survival rate for this kind of incident are not great - maybe 30% - and the likelihood of recurrence is pretty high too. The survival rates for a second occurrence are much lower. I hope he pulls through, but this is not sounding good.

Not to mention the chances of severe disability. After death, that's the biggest problem with strokes.

I saw his picture on Yahoo that also downplayed reports of him being stable. I was actually afraid to read the headline.

Everything I have read says Brain hemorrhage... that is very different from a stroke isn't it? My understanding is hemorrhage is bleeding whereas a stroke is an air bubble going to the brain...

Just read this -- unfortunately, it doesn't sound so good. I don't watch Rock of Love and haven't seen him on The Apprentice, but I know who he is through Poison and just read a story about him and his young daughters in People. Makes me so sad that this has happened to him so young, esp. with his daughters being so young. I hope he will beat the odds and fully regain his faculties after this.

Understanding Bret Michaels' health crisis: subarachnoid hemorrhage

Reality show star and rocker Bret Michaels is at an undisclosed medical center suffering what has been described as a “massive brain hemorrhage”. Fans of the 47 year old Poison lead singer/songwriter and Rock of Love TV show have received conflicting reports from news sources -- some claim he is “stable” and others say Michaels is in “critical” condition. Now his publicist has just confirmed to ABCnews.com that Michaels had a massive subarachnoid hemorrhage, or bleeding at the base of his brain stem.

Bottom line: Bret Michaels has experienced the most serious and, often, the most deadly type of stroke.

According to the Emory Stroke Center in Atlanta ,there are two kinds of strokes. Ischemic strokes are caused by a blocked artery or blood vessel. However, hemorrhagic strokes, the kind that felled Michaels, occur when a blood vessel or artery bursts, causing blood to leak into the brain.

The vast majority of strokes about 80% are ischemic. The other 20% are hemorrhagic strokes. Ischemic strokes often give warning signs such as dizziness and weakness on one side of the body -- and if a person seeks emergency medical care immediately, there is often a good chance that brain damage can be prevented or minimized. Unfortunately, hemorrhagic strokes are more difficult to catch and treat.

Michaels’ diagnosis of a subarachnoid hemorrhage means there was bleeding in the area between the brain and the thin tissues that cover the brain called the subarachnoid space. Typically, the main symptom is a sudden, excruciating headache – which is exactly what Bret Michaels reportedly experienced and why emergency help was called for him.

What could have caused this life-threatening hemorrhage? There are several possible causes including bleeding from an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) or a cerebral aneurysm (a weakness in the wall of a cerebral artery or vein that causes a localized dilation which can “blow out” much like a worn car tire can rupture). Bleeding disorders, drugs that increase bleeding, and blows to the head can up the risk for a bleeding-type stroke, too. However, other times, subarachnoid hemorrhages are dubbed idiopathic, meaning no cause is known.

Treatment usually involves brain surgery to try and repair the cause of bleeding, relieve symptoms, and prevent complications such as permanent brain damage.

Wow...I mean, it was definitely common knowledge that he suffered from diabetes, and there were instances on Rock of Love where he didn't drink for that very reason. I heard that diabetes could have been a factor in it, but regardless, I'm praying for him.

I hope he will be okay.

My uncle had an aneurysm at 44. With the right treatment and some luck it can be okay.

(I know it isn't the same condition but some of the result was the same.)

Bret Michaels' Doctors Seeking "Source of Bleeding"

Bret Michaels remains hospitalized in critical condition following a brain hemorrhage Thursday night, his tour manager said in an update posted to his Web site Sunday.

"He is under 24 hour doctors' care and supervision," wrote Janna Elias of the rocker, 47, who is in the intensive care unit. "We are hopeful that further tests will locate the source of the bleeding, which has still not been located.

"As we all know, Bret is a fighter and we are hopeful that once all is complete, the slurred speech, blurred vision and dizziness, etc. will be eliminated and all functions will return to normal," Elias continued.

She said Michaels' team was grateful for the outpouring of support.

"Everyone at Michaels Entertainment would like to thank all fans and friends for their continued thoughts and prayers through this difficult time," she wrote.

Michaels' father Wally Sychak told RadarOnline.com he spoke to his son in the hospital Friday morning.

"He sounded upbeat and positive but they had him sedated," Sychack said. "But he's doing good. [sic] He sounded like my son."

Sychak says doctors believe Michaels' hemorrhage -- and emergency appendectomy earlier this month -- are complications from his type 1 diabetes.

So I guess this is confirmation of where he's at right now.
