With the official Christmas holiday having been over for several weeks, many people have wondered why West Edmonton Mall has not taken down its Christmas decorations. Now the answer can be explained. Christmas will soon be coming again to West Edmonton Mall as it has been chosen as the primary location for Insight Film Studios’ new production, Christmas in Wonderland.
Leslie Nielsen, Ray Liotta, Chris Kattan and other big-name Hollywood actors still being confirmed will star in this major feature film jointly produced by Insight and the Academy Award-winning© Yari Film Group, whose movie Crash won the 2006 Oscar© for Best Picture. Christmas in Wonderland was written and will be directed by Canadian-born writer/director/producer James Orr, whose previous credits include the screenplay for Three Men and a Baby. Filming will take place at West Edmonton Mall from March through May 2007, with the movie scheduled for theatrical release this November.
The promotional value of this feature film is unprecedented, with West Edmonton Mall and the City of Edmonton both named and featured throughout the movie.
“As one of the first major Hollywood movies to be shot almost entirely in Edmonton, this film will significantly boost global awareness of Edmonton as a major film location and travel destination,” says Ken Fiske, Edmonton Economic Development Corp. vice-president of Tourism, Events and Motion Pictures. “Hosting the film production crew in the city generates economic spin-offs in addition to the invaluable media exposure garnered from a feature film that will achieve long-lasting audience exposure when it becomes a Christmas video favourite.”
Veteran producers Alexander Tabrizi and Henry Boger, along with writer/director James Orr, facilitated and brought this project to Yari Film Group and Insight Film Studios as a team to complete the financing.
“We’re very pleased to be partnering with Yari Film Group on this all-Canadian production that will draw well-deserved attention to one of our country’s landmark tourism destinations,” says Insight Film Studios CEO Kirk Shaw. “Considering that it’s Canada’s biggest – and most impressive – shopping mall, it was an easy choice to use it as the setting for Christmas in Wonderland.”
Writer/director James Orr says, “When I was first looking for the location to set this movie, I said I needed the mall-equivalent of the Land of Oz. Then I visited the WEM and it was only a matter of seconds before I knew this was it!”
West Edmonton Mall – one of the world’s premiere shopping and entertainment centres – is recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest mall and is Alberta’s number one tourist attraction with more than 22 million guests per year. The on-site filming of a major motion picture reinforces the mall’s branding as The Greatest Indoor Show on Earth, creating another unique and exciting experience for guests and enhancing the mall’s world-renowned “show” atmosphere.
Christmas in Wonderland is one of several major film productions recently filmed in Edmonton, including CBS Television’s Christmas Blessing, Lifetime USA’s For the Love of a Child, CBC’s Waking Walter and Warner Bros. The Assassination of Jesse James starring Brad Pitt.
