Robin Roberts begins her medical leave for her bone marrow transplant today. She hadn't planned to start her leave tomorrow, but she and her sister needed to go to their hometown in Mississippi because their mother is having health problems. Robin goes into the hospital next Tuesday; there is no estimation of how long she will be there...it could be months, depending on how she progresses. Her sister, her perfect match, had her marrow harvested a couple of days ago and is feeling fine; she was on the show (GMA) today. It was an extremely moving show today; they, truly, have a family on GMA. Martina McBride was there and sang a song, something about "I'll Love You Through It" (I'm sure somebody else knows the title better than I do); I was a complete mess. Martina even had to turn around to wipe away tears. They really love them some Robin! I think I'm going to check out the "Be The Match" site. Her showmates couldn't get enough of her today, plus they brought out all of the people who worked there; they had signs that said "Team Robin". Her sister is 8 years older that Robin is.
They have to totally knock out her defective bone marrow and immune system, introduce her sister's healthy marrow, and then work on building her immune system back up. She could be ready to go in a month, or it could take several months. She will be in isolation for a long time.
