Not well thought out, no. But desperate people do desperate, and stupid, things. Dr. Phil is the one that made a zoo out of this situation, not Lynne Spears for asking someone for help. I am sure that Lynne Spears and Britney's father have reached out to other professionals for help (as they have indicated in interviews), but no doctor is going to take on this situation when the patient so obviously does not want help.
"Close friends" can sometimes be Hollywood speak for "two people who know they can use each other".

I have no doubt there was a pre-existing relationship, but its probably not that long-standing, and its probably been more like "networking" than true friendship before this.

And its still based on the Spears' naive assumption that because Phil is on TV, he's "the best".

Really? I hadn't seen that, thanks Broadway. That puts a different light on things. Maybe they did think that he would keep things quiet because they have a relationship with him.

Here's another angle on that. From The Tennessean

Brentwood business manager defends the Spears family

By BEVERLY KEEL

I learned two things from Brentwood artist/business manager Lou Taylor's Today show appearance Wednesday on behalf of Britney Spears' mother, father and sister:

• My suspicion that a self-serving Dr. Phil McGraw sold out the family to promote himself appears to be true.

• If I am ever in trouble, I want Lou by my side.

Lou is president and CEO of Tri Star Sports and Entertainment Management and serves as business manager for Britney's parents, Lynne and Jamie, and Britney's younger sister, Jamie Lynn. The firm also manages model Niki Taylor and basketball player Ron Artest and handles marketing/branding for Big Kenny and business management for singer Mat Kearney.

Lou spoke toughly but eloquently as she described how the family feels betrayed by Dr. Phil, who was asked by the family to visit with Britney while she was in the hospital. Afterward, he issued a statement saying the pop singer was "in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention" and that he would address her situation on his show.

"What's wrong with Dr. Phil's statement is that he made a statement," says Lou, noting that the family never planned to do a show with Dr. Phil. "The family basically extended an invitation of trust for him to come in as a resource to support them, not to go out and make public statements. Any statements publicly that he made because he was brought in under this cloak of trust are just inappropriate."

Lou said there's a morbid part of our society that thrives on seeing people in need, rather than hoping they will get better. Perhaps the next time we all hear news about Britney, we'll say a little prayer or send warm thoughts her way, instead of making a disparaging remark. When it comes down to it, Britney is simply a young girl in serious trouble, and there's nothing funny about that.

Re: Britney Spears Just Won't Go Away

Yep, Unk... there is no doubt that Dr. Phil took Lynne Spears' request and ran with it... abusing the family's trust. I just don't think her request of him was odd, naive, or self-serving. Believing that he would keep it quiet was certainly naive.

Although, to be fair to him just a bit, too... he didn't announce to people that he was going to be there. He didn't set up photo ops. TMZ and others on the site plastered it all over that he had shown up in Britney's room and was seen walking her to her car. It had the potential for being a quiet in and out visit... hee. After they started questioning him, however, he should have shut his big mouth up. "No comment" isn't in his vocabulary.

Re: Britney Spears Just Won't Go Away

This seems rather odd.... so it's pretty much in keeping with the rest of her bizarre behavior lately.

Britney Steps Out – in Her Old Wedding Dress

Revisiting her wedding look, Britney Spears donned one of two dresses from her Kevin Federline nuptials to go to a car dealership last week with her new paparazzi friend.

Spears, 26, and Adnan Ghalib, 35, arrived at the Keyes Mercedes-Benz dealership in the San Fernando Valley on Friday afternoon, surrounded by the now-familiar pack of photographers that once contained Ghalib.

The twist was the pop singer was wearing the same lacy, short dress from her 2004 wedding to Federline – her second walk down the aisle following her 55-hour marriage to Jason Alexander.

Spears's own Mercedes was impounded last week after she abandoned it on the road when it blew a tire, but this trip to the dealer was for Ghalib, her constant companion since her meltdown.

"They came in to get an estimate for a new car for him," a sales associate says. "He drives a rental car now. ... He was looking into the different lease and purchase options for sport cars."

By the time they started talking business, Spears had covered up with a trench coat, the sales person says.

"She didn't talk at all and it didn't seem like she was getting the car for him," the sales associate says.

Re: Britney Spears Just Won't Go Away

It's a sad commentary on people when a person who is obviously suffering a mental illness and has an ongoing public meltdown, can't be or won't be helped.

Celebrity or not, this is a young woman, a mother, a sister, who needs help and is not getting any. Yet millions watch as if it's an on-going tv show.

It's gotten to a point where I won't be surprised if she either kills herself or injures someone else.

Mental illness is a disease. Mental illness can destroy the person who tries to live with it without seeking help. No-one asks for mental illness (even if they are a celebrity). Watching someone with mental illness get exploited by the paparazzi is not funny to me anymore.

Would someone please help this woman before we are watching her funeral on every news station on the planet? If only for the sake of her children?

Do we really want another Anna Nicole-type situation where everyone debates what should have, could have, might have been done to save a mother's life?

That's all for tonight.

Britney sure has an avid fan in Nancy Grace....even after the latest meltdown, Nancy Grace continues to support Bit Bit and assume that whatever her antics...KFed is to blame.

A lot of this depends on whether or not Britney is feeding them deliberately. Many people interpret her actions as her doing so. She makes little to no attempt to duck them, engages and teases them, sleeps with at least one of them, makes herself very visible in where she hangs out, etc.

As much as I dislike her parents for their past behavior, apparently that's what they are trying to do now--force her to get help. Perhaps, if you interpret them as opportunists, things have reached the point where even they realize Britney can't be milked for more cash. Or maybe they are just thick, and bad parents, and it took them this long to try and be decisive. They're making a hell of a lot of mistakes (involving Dr. Phil even for a moment was a mistake), but at least there's some reason to believe they might eventually get L.A. County on their side and get her committed. There are policemen galore who have witnessed her wacky behavior ready to testify, apparently.

On the other side, you've got sleazebags like Sam Lufti and this Adnan Ghalib, who will be the Howard K. Stern and Larry Birkhead figures standing over her corpse dancing in a shower of (her) money if this situation goes any further south.

my mother loves that woman's show. I haven't seen a lot of my mother lately so, haven't seen Nancy Grace....I don't like her or dislike her. Just indifferent.

But, if she is blaming Kevin for this woman's problems she has a problem as well.

Britney is IMO seriously mentally ill and I do not think he made her that way.

He may not have helped, but come on..........
