John Brunton - Executive Producer
John Brunton thinks TV. All the time. As the Globe and Mail writes, he "has airwaves between his ears."
A natural-born storyteller, Brunton recently celebrated his 26th anniversary at the helm of Insight Production Company Ltd.
As president and CEO, Brunton's entrepreneurial ingenuity, creative vision and passion for television have enabled him to position Insight as an industry leader in the development, financing and production of world class television programs.
As the Executive Producer of compelling dramas and documentaries, ground-breaking award shows, record-breaking comedy and variety series, sports, music and other programs, Brunton has worked with some of the most talented personalities in the world, from Shania Twain and Celine Dion to Scott Hamilton and Torvill and Dean.
Brunton has always been at the forefront of the cultural vanguard.
He began his career in news and current events, and produced some of the first social commentaries on television about acid rain and nuclear power (for NBC's Speak Up America in 1980).
In the same year, the short film Don't Mess With Bill, which he produced, was nominated for an Academy Award.
Fast forward to 2003, where as the Executive Producer of Canadian Idol, Canada's most successful series ever, Brunton has been recognized internationally for producing one of the best Idol formats from among the dozens produced around the world.
Brunton's wide-ranging talents are illustrated in the rich cross-section of entertainment programs he has produced.
In his capacity as Executive Producer, Brunton has produced and/or developed such memorable productions as: Canadian Idol, Canada's homegrown version of the hugely successful international series (CTV 2003 -2006); The Juno Awards, Canada's national music awards (CTV 2002-2006); Falcon Beach –- Season One (Global 2006); award-winning Hatching Matching and Dispatching (CBC 2006); Comedy Gold (CBC 2006); World Idol, the unprecedented international singing competition (CTV 2003/2004); the highly acclaimed dramatic series Ready or Not (Global, Showtime, Disney); The Seán Cullen Show, a half-hour comedy series (CBC 2003); and Open Mike with Mike Bullard, Canada's # 1 late night talk show (CTV, The Comedy Network 1997 - 2003).
Music and variety specials include, One World; Canada's concert for Tsunami relief (CTV 2005) Country Gold (CBC); Joni Mitchell: Painting with Words and Music (CBC); Jann Arden: Live at Last (CTV 2000); and Canada's Walk of Fame (Global TV 2001, 2002, 2003 & 2004, CTV 2005-2006).
