Comedian Jon Dore is a permanent fixture as Canadian Idol's Correspondent. He's also insane. Jon was kind enough to let us get into his brain for a bit and answer some of our questions. Hold on kids, it's scary.
How would you describe what it is that you do? After all, American Idol
doesn't have a 'Jon'. How did you come to be involved with Canadian Idol?
I was living in the Ottawa Valley doing some dairy farming and writing a
screenplay about naval mine detecting mermaids when the Idol host auditions
were being held in Toronto. After 4 or 5 trips back and forth I received a
phone call asking me to be the correspondant for the show. So I sold my
dairy farm and put my parents in a nursing home.
How do you maintain such a high level of energy during the audition process?
Do you make a lot of Tim Horton runs?
My body is like a fire. It needs three things to survive, oxygen, heat and
fuel. That's all I need to get going in the morning.Sometimes camping
enthusiasts will roast marshmellows over my naked body.
What kind of a relationship do you have with the contestants during the audition process?
The contestants and I are very close. By the last episode I can usually remember most of their first names.
When dealing with such an uncontrolled mass of people, there have to be
some memorable experiences. Do you have any to share?
My memory is horrible. But let me give it a try. My favorite ice cream is vanilla.
How do you and Ben get along off camera? Bitter rivals or close friends?
(The parent comparison bit was brilliant, by the way.)
Ben and I have been in 9 fist fights. I hate him. I hope that he burns his left hand in a pot of boiling water.
Why do you think Canadian Idol 2 was so successful last season?
Jacob Hoggard...I think that's his name.
What were the biggest differences between the first and second season and what do you predict for season three?
Season 1 took place in 2003 and season 2 took place in 2004. So, to me, the
biggest difference would be that Earl Hindman, best known as Wilson on the
television series Home Improvement, would not have seen the show considering he died in December 2003.
You seem to be a very unpredictable guy. How difficult was it to deal with
Jacob Hoggard last season, who also seems to be very unpredictable?
When dealing with people who are unpredictable you have to make them think that you are slightly crazier than they are. With Jacob that was extremely difficult. He won.
How has your role evolved over the past three years?
Now I have a stylist named Wayne which I didn't have in season 1 or 2.

STYLIST. I HAVE A COLLECTION OF ANTIQUE FIRE HYDRANTS. I LIKE TO PUT WIGS ON THEM AND PRETEND THAT THEY ARE CELEBRITIES LIKE AUDREY HEPBURN. I ALSO ENJOY TYPING LETTERS WITH THE CAPS LOCK KEY ON! BYE FOR NOW.
That's how my role has changed. I'm pampered now.
Since the beginning of the year, you've traveled all over Canada to be part of the auditioning process. Was there anything that remained constant, no matter what part of the country you were in?
Yes! Indeed! Absolutely! For sure! Yep! You bet! The things that remained
constant were mostly the things that didn't change. They mostly stayed the
same without much of a difference no matter what part of the country we were in. Except for Whitehorse...Everything was different in Whitehorse.
What is the best thing about being part of Canadian Idol?
Travelling with friends making a fun TV show.
