Canadian Idol 06/17 - Itís All About The Curly, Blonde Hair

Canadian Idol 06/17 - Itís All About The Curly, Blonde Hair

Isnít it sad that the best part of the show is the extended commercial?

Mulroney Out Ė No Really, Please Leave
Ben starts the show with that same annoying level of vapid excitement that weíve all come to hate. Heís obviously studied Ryan Seacrest at great length in the off season as he appears disheveled as though he just crawled out of bed. Check and check on the Seacrest checklist. Wisely, Ben doesnít attempt banter with the judges and just introduces them by name without giving them a chance to respond. This obviously catches the judges off guard and at least two appear very put off by it all. Nice work, Ben.

We get the usual recap of the night before. Ben tries very hard to make the show seem more interesting than it wasnít. Donít worry Ben, even a pro like Ryan couldnít have pulled that off. Since itís obvious that Ben canít fill the show himself, we turn toÖ

    The Babysitter
    ..Jon Dore.

Jon appears to share his exciting evening with the Idols. He took them to see Spiderman 2. Wow. That is exciting. What a glamourous life they lead. I bet theyíre all thrilled that they took a hiatus from their everyday lives so they could go to a deserted theater with Jon Dore. Yes, they saw the movie two weeks before everyone else, but that really is only exciting to people that would never actually admit to another living being that they find it exciting.

In any case, Ben and Jon have an obviously rehearsed, very awkward and uncomfortable Ďskití. Itís more like a tantrum, but since Ben is trying so hard, Iíll let it go. Ben claims heís very upset that he wasnít invited. Jon apologizes. Laughter does not ensue, proving that the audience is more intelligent than the talent. Why Jon couldnít have pointed out that Ben was likely taping one of his important episodes of Etalk Daily, Iíll never know.

Fortunately, they end the skit and cut to an extended version of the Spiderman trailer. Followed by a LíOreal commercial, of course. I will give Ben credit though, he had his best line of the night when coming back from the break he immediately promised the results right after the break. He was almost funny. Almost.

And Now For Something Completely Different
Enough with the Ben analysis, (which should indicate how bored I was by this group) itís time to reveal the results of Canadaís vote. Ben asks the judges to predict the results. The judges all come up with a mix of Jessica, Josh, Brandy and Raj. Farley even goes so far as to hint itís all about the ĎJaysí and then makes a bat swinging motion. Oh Farley, no one even cares about the Jays anymore. Thatís so 1994.

Ben begins to reveal the results to the anxious competitors. First member of the top three is Brandy. Iím most surprised when Ben announces that Raj doesnít go through. Jessica and Josh complete the top three. All are very thrilled to advance. Well, advance for the next 5 minutes until one of them is cut.

The first to advance to the Top 10, with the highest amount of votes, is Joshua. Everyone, including Josh, is somewhat surprised. He takes the mic and sings [i]Somewhere Out There[/b]. To his credit, he does a much better job than the night before.

    The Best of The Mediocre
Ben asks the judges what they think so far and who they think will advance of the remaining competitors. Farley reiterates that itís all about the Jís. Zack says it doesnít matter because neither of them deserve to be there. Sass believes that Canadians are voting the way they are because itís Canada and they CAN. Ah, thereís the old incoherent Sass we all know. Jake takes the high road and says both girls are great singers.

Brandy is the other singer to advance to the Top 10. Jessica heads back to the couch dejected, crashing so quickly after her high from earlier. Before Brandy sings, Ben tells the depressed group on the couch that they have a shot at the wild card, so donít despair. They donít seem comforted, what with being the sucky group and all. Brandy does give a stronger performance to close out the show.

Next Week Ė Group Two performs. If they sing half asleep, chances are theyíll be more entertaining than this group was.
If you go through a lot of hammers each month, I don't think it necessarily means you're a hard worker.
It may just mean that you have a lot to learn about proper hammer maintenance.

Great job, Miss F! It sounds like CI is a bit like the last season of AI. Very funny and enjoyable read.

Farley even goes so far as to hint itís all about the ĎJaysí and then makes a bat swinging motion. Oh Farley, no one even cares about the Jays anymore. Thatís so 1994.

Geez, do Nova Scotians have nothing better to do with their time than sit on their redial buttons and vote for bad singers!!???!! Really upsetting, with so many really good singers in this year's top 32 that we end up with a bad one in the very first show.

Should have been Jessica that got through.......NOT Brandy. Do not like her at all. I think she's fake.

Well, I just caught up on the first two shows from last week, and I must say I'm surprised on several levels:

I say this partially in jest, but, on some level, I was shocked to learn that Canada does exist. Like most Americans, I thought it was mostly myth. Sure, I knew about niagara falls and the Windsor casinos. And, I probably would have guessed that there might even be at few beaver trapping outposts up there, but, tbh, I thought it was like Antartica: a big body of land that is way too cold and inconvenient for anyone to live in. Being the geography-challenged, ethnocentric product of an American education, it takes some doing, but I fully admit that I now stand corrected. Not only does Canada exist, but each and every one of the contestants had their own hometown, complete with buildings and other non-igloo edifices! It was really quite fascinating. (Now some of the buildings did look a little old western cardboard-like to me, but I probably shouldn't start another idol conspiracy theory this early in the game.)

All kidding aside, I liked the show, though it felt pretty strange watching a non-US version AI. It was akin to watching an SNL parody of AI: just similar enough to be eerie and not in any way funny.

That said, I really liked that they had four credible judges. The dynamic was so much better than three. It didn't seem like they had to offset each other or accomodate any excess negative or positive energy from a previous comment. Though most of them gave critiques that were a bit dull, at least they all seemed to be giving their honest opinions, which is a huge plus in my book.

That host (Mulroney?) seemed a bit amateurish to me, like a better looking Brian Dunkleman without all the negative energy. He was kinda likeable, but he just didn't seem to think well on his feet.

As for the singers, I liked several of them. If we were playing a prediction game , I would have ranked them like this:

    1. Kyla - Easily my fave of the night. I thought there was a really great soulful tone to her voice. I hope she makes it back for the wildcard round.

    2. Annie - Her accent made some of the song sound very awkward, but I still liked it. I may also be coloring it positively since I have some lingering good vibes towards that song after hearing Rube, Kelly, Di and Tasia sang it in the AI finale.

    3. Raj - His voice reminded me of someone, though I can't really place it. (Stevie Wonder maybe?) His look definitely didn't remind me of anyone. Does anybody know his ethnicity? To me, he looked like he was half African-American, er African-Canadian, and half Pakistani.

    4. Brandy - Though she sang well, I was surprised she got through. Ithink she got some compassion votes when she said she sang the song because it took her a long time to learn to love herself. It was a nice and revealing sentiment.

    5. Joshua - The Simon-doppelganger hit the nail on the head. He's a cross between The Greatest American Hero -- er the Greatest Canad... oops, wait, no correction needed here -- and Clay Aiken. Given that he was the highest vote getter despite his average performance makes me think that Canada has their fair share of teeny-bases.

    6. Jessica -

    7. Andrae - I have a feeling this guy may be an illegitimate Wayan brother. With that suit, I was half expecting him to start snapping his fingers and doing a John Stevens. But, alas, he didn't do that. He did get JS-like critiques, though.

    8. Anabelle - Filipino idols seems to be a theme this year. It's too bad there isn't a Canadian version of Hawaii, or else I'm sure she would have gone through.

All in all, I'm pleased that I watched it. If all goes well, perhaps it can be the methadone to AI3 heroin.

(and I promise to study some geography and other canada stuff, so please don't throw any tomatoes my way )

Thanks BobDobolina for the American perspective on our show. I too, thought our singers were pretty good, but as you've probably seen, we are notoriously hard on ourselves and our own!
Your assessment of the judges and Ben were right on, too...

Thanks touque. I live to comment. And frankly, I thought I was going to be riding a sea of derision for my Canada jokes (and ignorance).

So, is CI as popular in Canada as AI is here? I'm just wondering b/c there doesn't seem to be much activity in these forums.

Good question. Due to the activity here, I would say no. But then again, it may be a population thing. For a Canadian show, it does get amazing ratings here...

I'd guess that it's a population thing too. The Americans outnumber the Canadians on this board by a very large margin. Plus, it's really just starting and the interest doesn't get really heated until the top 10. Much like with AI.

And of course, not all of us Canadians have hydro in our igloos. :rolleyes
