PREMIERE PARTY INFO FROM OUT.COM

Wednesday, July 30, 2003

Boy Meets Boys…

Even at this week’s Los Angeles premiere party for Bravo’s new reality dating show, Boy Meets Boy, it was difficult to tell who is straight and who is gay—which didn’t stop numerous Hollywood types from trying. Here Lounge in West Hollywood was packed with studs for the event, including 13 of the 15 contestants vying for the attention of bachelor James on the Tuesday night series. “That boy is definitely gay!” stated a publicist about one lad on the show—mere seconds before the guy leaned in to kiss his girlfriend. Oops. The crowd, which included many other reality-show vets as well as NYPD Blue’s Bill Brochtrup, didn’t seem to mind the twist. “I loved the show!” Big Brother 3’s Marcellas Reynolds told Out.com. “I’m looking for the producers. I want to be the next bachelor!”The Amazing Race 4’s still-in-the-game Reichen Lehmkuhl told Out.com that what he’s looking forward to most isn’t the climax of his show; it’s getting his braces off. The friendly and outgoing Lehmkuhl, who has been studying acting, got clear braces four months ago. “I’m getting them off Saturday,” he beamed. “They have been tightening them every week—it hurt so much.” What price beauty?

Oh, 1083. If I read that article correctly, James found out about the deception when there were only 3 men left. That's outrageous! Hey Bravo, I always watched your programming, but now I think I need a nurse. Shame on you and your ratings monger croonies! I just can't see this in any other light.

Oh no. That's way too late to have told him. That is too sad.

Splatty, how will Bravo expect contestants to trust them for future shows? They might start to get the Jerry Springer types who just want drama and to be on TV.

I think anyone who agrees to be on a reality show needs to expect this these days... Producers are not involved in this to 'help' you find true love - they are out to exploit you and make you look ridiculous so people can watch, laugh and they can get the ratings and the millions of dollars.... James got his trip to New Zealand which was given by a sponsor so Bravo and the production company makes a lot of money. I worked on a daytime talk show where I got to sit in meetings with producers and executives from the studio-- You would be horrified if you heard how th ese people talk about their guests.

The saying was "I can bring him here in a limo..... send them home in a cab.>>:

Well this is not a TV interview, but Brian, the straight chiropractor who works in Hillcrest, the gay section in San Diego, gave an interview to TV GUIDE ONLINE that Im posting below. This now makes sense since at first I thought chiropractor was a very gay friendly field - seems like there are tons of chiropractors that are gay and many gay men who go to chiropractors lately. So this was an experiment and a marketing tool for him. Also read an other article that I posted somewhere about an aspiring actor pretending to be gay on the show - could it be our beloved DAN?

============================== ========\\
Is it right for straight men to compete on Bravo's gay dating show, Boy Meets Boy? To our best knowledge, no gay suitors were asked to fake interest in Trista on The Bachelorette. So why does James, the gay bachelor, have heteros hiding in his dating pool? That's the show's twist: If James picks a gay man, they win a posh vacation together. If he unwittingly picks a heterosexual, the joke's on him, and the straight dude wins $25,000.

Among the trio voted off this week was Brian Austin, 30, the straight chiropractor from San Diego, Calif. (Who knew?) Here, he tells TV Guide Online why he's for the boys.

TV Guide Online: Why would a straight man do this show?
Brian: For me, it was to support the gay community. I own a chiropractic business in Hillcrest, the gay neighborhood in San Diego. I have a lot of gay friends and patients. I have seen that gay people are super cool, and I want the rest of the country to see that. Why not lend my support? I grew up in a conservative area. My friends and family were a little freaked out I was doing the show, so what better reason?

TVGO: Well, this won't hurt your practice either. Good PR, huh?
Brian: Oh, it sure is. It's almost like celebrity status in my community. We did our biggest promotion last weekend, at the gay pride festival in Balboa Park. I blew up the show's ad and put it on the booth where I was checking spines. We signed up a record 63 new patients in two days!

TVGO: Every dating show has making out, hot tub action, etc. Just how far were you willing to go?
Brian: With the flirting thing, at some level of intimacy, you're going to get too far out of your comfort zone and bail. I definitely wouldn't have kissed anyone, but I had no problem flirting or even giving someone a hug.

TVGO: So you would not have kissed James?
Brian: No. I'm just not attracted to men. For me to do that on national TV for $25,000? It's not a whole lot of money. Maybe for half a million! (Laughs) I wasn't going in expecting to win the money. I was just there to meet people and have fun. Nothing against James. He's a great looking guy and a great person, but I like girls!

TVGO: Is it cruel to trick a gay guy into falling for a straight person?
Brian: There's definitely that element of deceitfulness. I saw some people were blatantly lying [in the first episode].

TVGO: Well, do you think anyone looking for love on reality TV deserves whatever they get? These shows are always full of tricks.
Brian: That sounds reasonable. There's definitely a controversial element to the show. People were scorned, but I think overall, the outcome will be more positive than negative.

TVGO: What about the stereotype that gay guys like to hit on disinterested straight guys. (As if!) Might this show reinforce such nonsensical thinking?
Brian: All the straights that they chose were very open. It wasn't like they were putting James up against someone who'd have a problem with him.

TVGO: Do you have a girlfriend off-screen?
Brian: No, I'm between 'em right now. I'm taking applications.

TVGO: Will Boy Meets Boy help or hurt your cause?
Brian: I think it'll definitely help, because women will know I'm secure and open and cool with everyone. So that's a positive thing. If they're not cool with it, I don't need them to be interested in me.

I didnt get a chance to post it in advance, but one of the co-creators/producers of the show was interviewed by CNN this afternoon; perhaps they will re run it or maybe they have the transcript on their website. He basically said he's open to also doing a lesbian version of the show... said he hopes that gays are integrated into more mainstream tv shows in addition to this latest 'trend' - also said the original idea for a gay dating show came from Bravo after the success of the production companies GAY WEDDINGS series which followed gay and lesbian couples getting married in a documentary format. He said after NBC bought Bravo, they still continued with the development. Also said he hopes it helps break stereotypes with the whole 'social experiment' as he called it.
