A space opera revival?
Thanks to playing Mass Effect under the recommendation of a friend I am now into the space opera genre. I have started reading space opera novels by authors like Iain M. Banks, Alastair Reynolds, and Peter F. Hamilton. The success of Guardians of the Galaxy makes this still a viable genre on the big screen. However the genre seems to have died on TV. We had Space Opera shows like Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Babylon 5, Farscape, and Star Trek. So what killed the Space Opera genre for TV? Is there a stigma that the genre is too "nerdy" that turns people away? Is it bad stories that people can't relate too? Is it that the characters are not interesting? Is it cost? Have we been too spoiled with these comic book movies that require millions of Dollars in CGI that for a space opera show to appeal to this generation it will need non stop space battles that would require way more money then any TV network has?
However Syfy is giving us The Expanse and FX is making Redshirts into a series. There is also going to be a new Star Trek.
On the video game front we have Mass Effect Andromeda and a glut of new Star Wars games.
Paradox, a game studio best known for historical strategy games are entering the space genre with Stellaris.
Disney is giving us Star Wars every year and there is going to be another Guardians of the Galaxy. Luc Besson is giving us Valerian, which is based on a Franco-Belgian comic. And there is a Mass Effect movie in the works.
In literature Anne Leckie's Ancillary Justice has won numerous awards including the Hugo, Nebula, and Arthur C. Clarke awards. The Expanse series by James S.A. Corey has also found success.
Would you say that the space opera is going through a resurgence? Just several years ago it seemed like the space opera was dying. In 2011 space opera has declined greatly in literature, TV, and movies. Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck were told that the space opera genre was dead when they pitched their novel idea to the publishers. Thankfully Orbit choose to publish Leviathan Wakes and it has been successful. Hopefully the TV show will bring space opera back to TV. In 2015 it looks like space opera is about to make a huge comeback.
