I think all of my favorites have already been mentioned in this thread, but, here goes:

    The Secret Garden
C.S. Lewis - The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe, etc.
    The Wrinkle in Time series
The Borrowers - absolutely loved them!
    Anne of Green Gables series

I don't think anyone has mentioned:

I was remembering the other day that along with every Trixie Beldon, Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys mysteries I could find, I used to devour a mystery series about "the secret seven"--I believe they were written by Enid Blyton? Does anyone else remember? Also, this has really been bugging me: I remember reading a series of books about a group of children who went on adventures with a phoenix--they did things like riding magic carpets, etc. Does that ring a bell to anyone?

    Scarlett,

I don't remember a series with a phoenix, but the children in the "Wishing Chair" books go on adventures in a chair that has wings - similar. You might want to check out Amazon or Powell's.

Thanks, RBm...the Wishing Chair series does sound familiar. ETA: I was just doing some research on the 'net and found my books! They are by Edith Nesbit, who wrote among other things, "Five Children And It" and "The Phoenix and the Carpet," about a Psammaed (Sand Fairy) and a Phoenix. At least it's not bugging me now.

Dr. Seuss books littered my bedroom as a kid. I absolutely adore those books.
