I found a lot to like about The Gate House. Frankly, I was surprised to be reading it at all because Gold Coast was a DeMille book I never expected a sequel for.

The aspect of the book that jumped out at me the most was the dichotomy between mafia don father and mafia don son. If the Gold Coast was about a Godfather era mafia figure, then Gate House was about a Sopranos era mafia figure. Was the personality of either man influenced by his time and the image of the mafia in which he lived? Or do men like this influence popular culture, like The Godfather and The Sopranos? Chicken or egg. Nature vs. nurture.
