In that same vein, I would highly recommend Michael Tucker's Living in a Foreign Language. I was completely charmed by him and the entire book. Great writing, wonderful story and lots of talk about food. Of course, I wish I could duplicate all the food he talked about, but I don't have a walk-in brick oven in my yard!

A co-worker loaned me Steve Martin's Born Standing Up over the weekend and I finished it in a few hours. It's only about his stand-up career and was about 200 pages long. A nice, light read and very good. He grew up in Orange County like I did, so it was fun to read about his experiences there. I think he's quite a good writer, so this was a pleasure.

I'm still totally enthralled by City of Dreams. I keep reading it on my lunch break and hardly pay attention to the fact that my food gets cold!
WEll that sucks. I hate when authors or celebs I like act like that. Don't they know that it does color what people think of them and their work?
If I ever wrote a book, I'd be so thankful to people that wanted to interview me (and help publicize my book), that I hope I would be very gracious and polite. (I'd probably come off desperate like Sally Field when she won the Oscar: "you like me, you really like me". )

I was a fairly good George Clooney fan until he came to our town last year to shoot a movie. He acted (and so did Renee Zellweger) like such an ass to the locals that now that the movie is premering in a couple weeks, I only want to see it for the local scenary and I'm waffling about that now.

Damn, I'm really disappointed now as I loved those Tuscany books.

Damn, I really like George. Was he really an ass? Somehow, Renee being a witch is not hard to believe AT ALL.

Yeah, Renee just looks ready to be a bitch all the time with that pinched expression she always has plastered on her face. Maybe she's just hungry - she'd probably knock you over for a sandwich. Bummed about George though. Weird, since he always is near the top of the "Best Celebrity Autograph Givers" list every year.

Sorry to Ruin Frances Mayes books for you, MRD. Really though, read Michael Tucker's book - you won't be disappointed. I've always like him but, after I read that book, I understood exactly why Jill Eikenberry married him.

Re: What are you reading?

When that came out about George being at the top of the list for giving autographs, everyone here just rolled. He was so nasty to one person I know that I was just shocked. He practically ran over her daughter as they were all leaving a restaurant at the same time, turned around and snarled at the mother to "watch her kid". The kid asked for an autograph, he looked at her and said: "I'm busy" and stalked off and stood on the sidewalk talking for the next 10 min.

I've also heard others say the same thing about him while he was here. that he was rude and refused autographs. Renee didn't show her face outside the hotel the entire she was here. And the extras on the set were told NOT to approach her, look at her or talk to her.

I was shocked about Clooney because I always liked him and had heard that he was one of the few that was friendly. But apparantly not too friendly here.
You know, I think one of the reasons I avoid most celeb. gossip is because of that. I want to enjoy my movies or books or CD's without knowing that the celeb is an ass or whatever.
I used to LOVE Tom Cruise and I can't even watch the old movies like Top Gun anymore because of how he behaved a while ago. Bleh, I'd rather just not know and be able to watch the movies and enjoy the "fantasy".

One of the local drama companies put on a play over the summer called Chasing George Clooney and it was a scream. It parodied the entire frenzy that surrounded the making of this movie here. It focused on the townspeople and not the stars, but it was funny.
The local newspaper has been keeping a running countdown to the premiere. Kind of like how many shopping days until Christmas and everyone makes fun of it.

I'll check out Tucker's book. Thanks. And you didn't ruin the Tuscany books. I may read them again in a few years and forget about what you said. I just love all the food descriptions in them.

Oh and about Renee and the sandwich. I have always thought that about her. The only time she looked happy was when she gained weight to make the Bridget Jones movies. So she must be hungry and cranky. Low blood sugar from not eating does that to people.

Re: What are you reading?

I have just finished reading a Book titled The Miller Beer Barons (The Frederick J Miller Family and its' brewery) by Tim John, great grandson of the founder Frederick Miller. Family history from the beginning until the sale of the last 47% stock to Phillip Morris in 1970.

Sounds interesting. My husband is sort of an amateur beer historian. I bet he would like to read it. I'll have to go look on some of my websites to see if I can find it. His birthday is coming up and I never know what to get for him. This would be perfect. I used to buy him beer steins as he collects them, but in the last few years they have REALLY gone up in price. What I used to be able to buy for under $20 is now double that.

Thanks for the idea Gabriel. You may have solved my problem of a gift this year.

Re: What are you reading?

I have never read Jayne Ann Krentz mystery novels until now - just finished an older one that a friend passed over to me called "Smoke in Mirrors" and really enjoyed it from the beginning. I previously read her Eclipse Bay romantic series years ago, but never knew she wrote mysteries and was surprised after reading Smoke that she had such a great mystery writing talent. Our library has tons of her mysteries and I feel like a kid in a candy store right now - don't know which ones to read first. Any suggestions????

I have just started "Lost & Found", also part of my friend's Krentz collection but have no idea what I should grab after it. If any of you have enjoyed her mysteries, please feel free to share any recommendations. Thanks!

Re: What are you reading?

Ice Station by Matthew Reilly. It would be just another die hard type movie, but hey, if it's done right it would be entertaining at the least.'Water for Elephants' by Sara Gruen.and'7th Heaven' by James PattersonSure - they're
both good books.

Re: What are you reading?

I'm reading Dedication by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Krauss (of Nanny Diaries fame). It's quite different from ND but I'm still enjoying it. Every other chapter takes place in current day, every other is a Flashback showing how things come together and getting more in depth of why Katie, the main character, feels the way she feels. It's quite good and I can't wait to see how it ends, as always I have the way I want it to be so now I want to know if I'll get it or not.
