I don't know that he'd need to hear it first-hand. It's evident you can just pull thoughts out of people's heads and listen to 'em whenever you want to. It appears all he REALLY needed to do was have someone bump the shelf and watch the ball smash. Then pluck the thought out and rewind it at your leisure.
When you're ten years old and a car drives by and splashes a puddle of water all over you, it's hard to decide if you should go to school like that or try to go home and change and probably be late. So while he was trying to decide, I drove by and splashed him again. - Jack Handey

Voldermort didn't want to go retrieve the prophecy himself cause he didn't want to draw attention to the fact that he had returned. Only he or Harry would be able to lift the prophecy from the shelf without,
    "suffering madness."
Dumbledore could recall the prophecy because he was there when it was orginally given.
I believe at one point they mentioned that Voldermort didn't trust anyone to relay the message accurately to him. I don't know that he could take someone else's memories from their head. I think you can only remove your own memories. After they are out, however, it appears that anyone can view them.

I fell for it to. My youngest is rereading it for the 10th time but she is ready for another one.
