Grannie Annie

Posted 03-14-2008 at 07:03 PM by buglover
As most already know, my grannie annie passed away in January. I honestly didn't think it would hurt this much. We were close in the non-traditional close family way. We didn't talk on the phone or get together much, but while my mother was alive, my grandmother was a key part of my life. Seeing her after my mother's death was very difficult. Mom and Grannie looked almost identical in the face and I felt sad each time I entered the home.

I miss her because I miss the stories she would tell about her life. We aren't by nature a sharing family so you have to ask generally for information. Grannie Annie was such an amazing woman who survived an enormous amount of things. She was born in 1918 and went through the depression. She also had to take care of her sister and her mother who had diabetes. My grannie had 5 children (my mother was the oldest) and worked as a nurse when my grandfather became too ill to bring in money. When he died, she was the sole provider to 3 of the 5 children. My mother and oldest uncle moved out shortly after moving from Michigan to California.
My grannie annie took care of me often while my mother went on trips, etc. She would make the two of us dinner and we would play cards or watch her shows. When my mother became ill and died my grandmother pushed through her grief and was the stone foundation for our family. When my oldest uncle passed away I felt for her in so many ways but she bounced back.
Her birthday is on Sunday and she would have been 90 years old. The houses are getting ready for sale and my family is all over the place in the US. We will no longer have the central meeting place that has been there for 40 years.
The fondest memory I have of my grannie annie is her taking care of when I was a teen with mono. On Monday I will ask all of my friends to think of her and send warmth and light her way on her journey.
I thank you all for being here, without your wonderful words of encouragement and support, I would be a mess.

Questions!

Posted 03-04-2008 at 04:22 PM by PGM35
I am not "new" to blogging or journaling. I know it's pretty much up to us to write whatever we want and people will comment or they won't. No biggie - I've learned to not take those that do not comment, personally. Sometimes, there's no comment to the blog and that's ok.

Here though, I have a question that I can't seem to get answered in the forum. I was on this morning and now it's 2:20PM where I am and still no answer.

How do I know when someone comments on my blog? Is there a toggle switch that I can turn 'on' to get an email notification? What about "subscribing" to my blog? Will that send me notifications by email? And does subscribing to one's own blog post and commenting to one's own blog post cause an email notification to be generated? Ah, the questions are piling up. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks all!

On War

Posted 03-01-2008 at 10:44 AM by myrosiedog
The bones of history lie beneath
The places we do step
The graveyards and the battlefields
The ground were men have slept.

For amid the smoke and guns discharge
The war is never won
Those lives that lived and died
For glory that is none.

We wonder what gain is made
Through eons of such strife
The man alone who suffers such
And gives up his whole life.

And though the stories we are told
Hold victory in the lead
It is the man who suffers life
amid such heroic deed.

No victors walk the valiant mile
No losers hang their head
As history tells us throughout time
All are long since dead.

Running out of Gas

Posted 02-27-2008 at 05:04 PM by PGM35
Wrote this last week but wanted to get a blog up!

Crap - where did the day go?! I wanted to journal about my lunch break but never seemed to get a chance to. I have time to waste right now (as opposed to normally???), while I'm scanning a document in page by page...ugh!

Well, I'm not sure about you, but have you ever run out of gas? I know a few folks that this has happened to but never has happened to me! Once, when I stopped to get gas when my light came on, my gas tank opener (or whatever it's called) wouldn't open! It was one of those spring loaded kind but wouldn't open when pushed. Needless to say, I panicked. I drove (on E!) to the dealership (it was a lease) and they fixed it but I still needed to get gas. She said there was a FTE - Fuel To Empty - gauge on it so just check that and see how many gallons I had left. WOW - never knew that. Well, I turned in my lease over a year ago and now driving a GMC that doesn't have the FTE gauge.

At lunch my light comes on and I panic. How much do I have left? How far can I go? Well, it's 4 miles from work to home but going home doesn't help me. There are no less than 4 gas stations on my way home but I want to go to HEB Plus where I have a Bonus points card and it's usually cheaper per gallon. I hold my breath the whole way there (5 miles from work) and whew, just make it!

It was 4 cents higher than 7'Eleven!

Anway, anyone have any idea how much gas is left in the tank when the light comes on? I've always wondered.
