Re: The Biggest Loser Ukrainian transformations

    Hi I'm back here!

Two days ago Ukraine saw the finale of season 5, which turned out to be the season of contrasts - there were a lot of both extraordinary and very bad results of losing weight.

The concept of the season were families. Nine overweight families, each of three members, came to the show to lose weight and regain the normal life. We still had the same three trainers - Anita, Igor and Viatcheslav. Each trainer was to control three families, i.e. nine contestants.

    So Igor picked up:
THE BLUE TEAM - Husband & wife, Petr and Elena, and their son Evgeniy.
THE PINK TEAM - Three sisters, Olya, Tatiana and Yulia.
THE RED TEAM - Sisters Viktoria and Irina, and their mom Lubov.

    Viatcheslav chose next teams:
THE GREEN TEAM - Husband & wife, Aleksandr & Alla, and Alla's mom Raisa.
THE YELLOW TEAM - Husband & wife, Georgij & Anna, and their kum Yurij.
THE BROWN TEAM - Husband & wife, Ruslan & Natalia, and their kuma Ksenia.

    Finally, Anita controlled:
THE AQUA TEAM - Sisters Miroslava and Olga, and their nephew Roman.
THE PURPLE TEAM - Husband & wife, Valeriy & Oksana, and their daughter Katya.
THE ORANGE TEAM - Three brothers, Igor, Sascha and Andrei.

Here goes the table with all the contestants and their basic information.

Re: The Biggest Loser Ukrainian transformations

Now, contestants themselves, before and after (in order of elimination). First - the contestants that were eliminated before the individual stage.

    Yulia Ferenchuk
    Team: PINK
Starting weight: 116 kg (256 lbs)
Finale weight: 88 kg (194 lbs)
    Weight loss: 24,14%

    TRIVIA:
    - Yulia was the first pink sister to be eliminated from her family, however, she showed considerably better results at the finale than both her sisters.
    - Yulia and her sisters were up for elimination in week 1, and she was eliminated because of being the mentally strongest of the three sisters. However she took her elimination very painfully, believing that her twin sister Olya had to leave, because she let the team down in challenges. Sisters had a conflict, and were about to part their ways in anger for each other. Only in the last moment they reconciled, rather emotionally.

    Oksana Novikova
    Team: PURPLE
Starting weight: 115 kg (254 lbs)
Finale weight: 84 kg (185 lbs)
    Weight loss: 26, 96%

    TRIVIA:
    - Was eliminated not by voting, but in the losers challenge. In week 2, purple and blue teams fell below the yellow line and had to take part in an elimination challenge. The strongest members of the teams had to release other two from chains (i will skip the details). The last released person in the losing team had to leave the camp. Purple lost, and, because Valeriy was the strongest member and Katya was released first, Oksana had to leave.

    Roman Bigun
    Team: AQUA
Starting weight: 159 kg (351 lbs)
Finale weight: 145 kg (320 lbs)
    Weight loss: 8, 80%

    TRIVIA:
    - Roman and his team suddenly left the show in week 3 with a scandal. In the middle of the week, Roman declared to his trainer Anita that he misses his son very much and is ready to leave the Biggest Loser camp. Anita was not able to persuade him to stay. There was one condition - in such case Roman had to take with himself both his aunts, which he did, explaining that he just has made such decision.
    - However, in contrast to American and Australian show, the team was invited to the finale and was eligible for the at-home prize. At the finale Roman explained that before going to the camp, his son fell seriously ill. He was nervous about him, and, in week 3, the worry took over him and he decided to go home. Whether this is truth or not, is not known. And frankly, not our business either.

    Olga Vdovich
    Team: AQUA
Starting weight: 129 kg (284 lbs)
Finale weight: 79 kg (174 lbs)
    Weight loss: 38,76%

    TRIVIA:
    - Left the show in week 3 together with Roman and Miroslava, by, supposedly, a general family decision.

    Miroslava Vdovich
    Team: AQUA
Starting weight: 172 kg (379 lbs)
Finale weight: 136 kg (300 lbs)
    Weight loss: 20,93%

    TRIVIA:
    - The heaviest woman of the season, and the tallest one. In fact, she is second in height among all 27 contestants, only Ruslan Karpenko is taller by a couple of cm.
    - In week 2, Miroslava felt bad after the challenge and was taken to the hospital with heart problems. She didn't leave the hospital until whole her team withdrew from the competition in the next week.

    Valeriy Novikov
    Team: PURPLE
Starting weight: 106 kg (234 lbs)
Finale weight: 104 kg (229 lbs)
    Weight loss: 1,89%

    TRIVIA:
    - The lightest male contestant in the history of Ukrainia TBL.
    - Set up an antirecord with 1,89% of body weight loss, finally "beating" the antirecord of Irina Sklyarenko from season 1.
    - In week 3, purple and pink teams fell below the yellow line and took part in the elimination challenge. The winning team had the only vote to decide who of the losing team will leave the camp. Purple won and had this vote, however, Valeriy said that he would leave the camp to keep two young pink sisters in (personally I think that in fact he just didn't give a damn to the whole thing).

    Yurij Fedorenko
    Team: YELLOW
Starting weight: 130 kg (287 lbs)
Finale weight: 110 kg (243 lbs)
    Weight loss: 15,38%

    TRIVIA:
    - In week 4, yellow team lost the elimination challenge and decided that Yurij would go home. Supposedly, Anna and Georgij were angry at Yurij because he rumoured about them in the camp, and specially lost the challenge to send him home.
    - Yurij couldn't come to the finale because he serves as a chaplain in the ATO-zone. However, he was weighed-in a couple of days before the finale. He also recorded a video message where wished everyone happy New Year and healthy life.
    - Surprisingly, but his weight loss was the best in the yellow team.

    Tatiana Ferenchuk
    Team: PINK
Starting weight: 108 kg (238 lbs)
Finale weight: 104 kg (229 lbs)
    Weight loss: 3,70%

    TRIVIA:
    - After her elimination, Tatiana met with her trainer Igor in september, and... told him that losing weight is too hard for her because of family circumstances (Tatiana has 4 children at the age of only 23). She looked quite unhappy and said that she wouldn't come to the finale. She appeared there, though, but lost only 4 kilos in total.

    Lubov Luka
    Team: RED
Starting weight: 135 kg (298 lbs)
Finale weight: 86 kg (190 lbs)
    Weight loss: 36,30%

    TRIVIA:
    - Lubov is the oldest contestant in the Ukrainian TBL, with 64 years old.
    - During some time in the first weeks, Lubov managed to be current Biggest Loser among all contestants, her weight loss percentage was the biggest. However, soon she was eliminated, giving way to her daughters.

    Andrei Konstantinov
    Team: ORANGE
Starting weight: 124 kg (273 lbs)
Finale weight: 77 kg (170 lbs)
    Weight loss: 37,90%

    TRIVIA:
    - Two years earlier, Andrei's weight reached the point of 180 kilos, but he managed to lose over 50 kilos on his own.
    - In week 5 Andrei had a rupture and didn't take part in any of the challenges. The same week he lost only 1 kilo, and his team fell below the yellow line, together with red, pink and purple. Each team had to eliminate one contestant, according to the rules of the week, and Andrei himself asked others to vote him out because of the rupture.

    Katya Novikova
    Team: PURPLE
Starting weight: 147 kg (324 lbs)
Finale weight: 106 kg (234 lbs)
    Weight loss: 27,89%

    TRIVIA:
    - The youngest contestant of the season.
    - In week 5, four teams with worst percentages over the period of 5 weeks had to eliminate one contestant each. Because Katya's parents already left the camp, she had no other choice but to leave herself.
    - In week 15, Katya had a chance to come back to the camp along with Irina Luka and Anna Tsintsadze as a joker-comeback contestant. The choice was made by the chance as Aleksandr Repyanchuk had to pick up one of the three envelopes which contained the names of the mentioned contestants (these three contestants were chosen by their trainers). However, Aleksandr picked up the envelope where name "Anna" was written.

    Georgij Tsintsadze
    Team: YELLOW
Starting weight: 114 kg (251 lbs)
Finale weight: 100 kg (220 lbs)
    Weight loss: 12,28%

    TRIVIA:
    - Together with Anna was very unpopular in the camp among other contestants because of his character.
    - In week 6, Georgij with his wife Anna, red sisters Viktoria and Irina, and blue men Evgeniy and Petr all took part in the elimination challenge. They had to get out of the 2-meter high pit. The last remaining person in the pit and his team were to be the losers. Yellow team lost the challenge (with Evgeniy from the blue team even preventing Georgij from getting out and pushing him back in the pit because of yellow team's unpopularity). The last remaining contestants in the pit were Georgij and Viktoria, and the latter was very hard to get out, though everyone helped her. In the end, Georgij decided to help Viktoria and pushed her from back up to the ground, sentencing fimself and his wife. This deed changed the hearts of other contestants towards him, and they decided to vote out Anna. However, Georgij said that he would not leave his wife alone and would go home together with her.

    Olya Ferenchuk
    Team: PINK
Starting weight: 131 kg (289 lbs)
Finale weight: 119 kg (262 lbs)
    Weight loss: 8,80%

    TRIVIA:
    - Was very unhappy to be eliminated, and, like her sister Tatiana, didn't achieve any results at home.

    Sascha Konstantinov
    Team: ORANGE
Starting weight: 133 kg (293 lbs)
Finale weight: 98 kg (216 lbs)
    Weight loss: 26,32%

    TRIVIA:
    - The only unmarried man in the season. However, at the finale he said that there is progress in this direction and indicated his supposed seond half among the audience.
    - One of only two contestants who gained weight at any of the weeks in the season, the other one being Natalia Karpenko.

    Elena Kersanova
    Team: BLUE
Starting weight: 122 kg (269 lbs)
Finale weight: 81 kg (179 lbs)
    Weight loss: 33,61%

    TRIVIA:
    - In week 9, red and blue team fell below the yellow line. Other contestants had to pick the team that will eliminate one of its members. Others chose blue team, and the family decided that Elena would go home, because Evgeniy was the central contestant in the team, and his father also needed to stay more and help him.

Re: The Biggest Loser Ukrainian transformations

Now, let's get down to the contestants who were eliminated in the individual stage, and to the finalists.

    Raisa Repyanchuk
    Team: GREEN
Starting weight: 160 kg (353 lbs)
Finale weight: 86 kg (190 lbs)
    Weight loss: 46,25%

    TRIVIA:
    - Was not to take part in the show initially, instead of her the older son of Repyanchuk family was to be the contestant. However, medics found serious problems with one of his leg, so Raisa took his place. Not in vain definitely.

    Petr Kersanov
    Team: BLUE
Starting weight: 158 kg (348 lbs)
Finale weight: 95 kg (209 lbs)
    Weight loss: 39,87%

    TRIVIA:
    - The oldest male contestant in the history of the Ukrainian TBL.

    Irina Luka
    Team: RED
Starting weight: 105 kg (231 lbs)
Finale weight: 65 kg (143 lbs)
    Weight loss: 38,09%

    TRIVIA:
    - The lightest contestant of the season, and also the lightest at the finale.
    - Was very unhappy about her elimimation in week 14, and was the only contestant who was not sawn off by other ones. Only her sister Viktoria came to see her off. This, however, was only because of her momentary disappontment, everything is o.k. now.
    - In week 15, had a chance to come back to the camp, being chosen by her trainer Igor as a joker-comeback contestant. However, she was not picked up.
    - Has been 6 times under the yellow line, which is the anti-record in the whole series.

    Anna Tsintsadze
    Team: YELLOW
Starting weight: 128 kg (282 lbs)
Finale weight: 113 kg (249 lbs)
    Weight loss: 11,72%

    TRIVIA:
    - Has a dark past. Being a young girl, used to take drugs and even went to prison for pickpocketing. Eventually she managed to recover fully from drug addiction and regained normal life. But gained other addiction - from food.
    - Was very unpopular among other contestans because of her temper and, probably, her past.
    - Initially was eliminated in week 6 after the elimination challenge. But in week 15 came back to the camp. Each of the trainers had to pick one contestant from their big team to come back. Igor chose Irina Luka, Anita chose Katya Novikova, and Viatcheslav chose Anna. By chance, the envelope with the name "Anna" was picked up and she returned to the camp. However, was eliminated the same week after losing nothing at the weigh-in and falling below the red line.

    Evgeniy Kersanov
    Team: BLUE
Starting weight: 173 kg (381 lbs)
Finale weight: 102 kg (225 lbs)
    Weight loss: 41,04%

    TRIVIA:
    - Was very unpopular among audience for pushing Georgij Tsintsadze to the pit in the elimination challenge in week 6. Also, at the same challenge, he got out of the pit literally "on the head" of other contestant, Viktoria (well, at least she agreed for this herself), which caused many to believe that he could do an irreversible harm to her by doing this.
    - In week 14, contestants played "Mafia" in the camp, and exactly Evgeniy was the Mafia. The rules were simple - Evgeniy secretly does something to spoil the life and weight-losing of other contestants, and if his cover is not blown, he gets immunity. Which he successfully did, other contestants thought Irina Luka was the Mafia.
    - In week 15, 8 remaining contestants divided into 4 competing couples. They had to weigh-in in couples, and the loser was to fall below the yellow line automatically. The very worst of the loser (who turned out to be Anna with 0) was automatically eliminated. Other three had to go to the elimination room for the voting session. Evgeniy lost to Ruslan Karpenko (who was his duel rival) and then was eliminated as a big threat.
    - Out of the alive contestants, he's the heaviest with 173 kilos.

    Viktoria Luka
    Team: RED
Starting weight: 156 kg (344 lbs)
Finale weight: 104 kg (229 lbs)
    Weight loss: 33,33%

    TRIVIA:
    - In week 16 she fell below the yellow line together with Natalia Karpenko, and was to take part in the elimination challenge. But, thinking about the number of "yellow lines" she had, she decided not to compete, thinking it's not good in relation to other contestants.
    - Was 6 times under the yellow line, which is the antirecord (she shares it with her sister Irina).

    Natalia Karpenko
    Team: BROWN
Starting weight: 136 kg (300 lbs)
Finale weight: 64 kg (141 lbs)
    Weight loss: 52,94%

    TRIVIA:
    - Had a very fat face and chin, which, in spite of the massive weight losses, didn't "go away" until the finale. I must say, even at the finale it's seen that some part of them still left.
    - One of the only two contestants who gained weight at any of the weigh-ins in this season, the other one being Sascha Konstantinov.
    - In week 17 Natalia refused to take part in the final challenge, where the contestants had to walk on the rope between two scyskrapers. Refusal to take part gave her the penalty of 3 kilos. The rules of the weigh-in said that the person who shows the worst result and falls below the red line, must leave immediately. Natalia lost exactly 3 kilos, which meant 0. She fell below the red line and didn't go the finale. Sadly, if she at least tried to walk on the rope, she would have these 3 kilos counted as her result, and she would have shown the 2-nd result then, and would have gone to the finale directly.
    - Has set a record in the Ukrainian TBL by losing 52,94% of her body weight. This is the biggest percentage of lost weight among all Ukrainian female contestants (she has beaten a female "everything-record holder" Yulia Fomina).

    Ruslan Karpenko
    AT-HOME PRIZE WINNER
    Team: BROWN
Starting weight: 155 kg (342 lbs)
Finale weight: 69 kg (152 lbs)
    Weight loss: 55,48%

    TRIVIA:
    - While Aleksandr and Ksenia went to finale straight after the last weigh-in, Ruslan along with Alla Repyanchuk fell under the yellow line in week 17, so Ukraine had to choose between him and Alla. Ukraine chose Alla to be the third finalist.
    - The strongest contestant of the season, he won the most challenges.
    - Is very popular among the audience for a lot of hilarious phrases that he uttered in a very serious voice.
    - Had 19.7 of BMI at the finale, which is the record among males in the history of Ukrainian TBL.

    Ksenia Pastukhova
    2ND RUNNER-UP
    Team: BROWN
Starting weight: 113 kg (249 lbs)
Finale weight: 64 kg (141 lbs)
    Weight loss: 43,36%

    TRIVIA:
    - Although Ksenia came to the show as a "helper" for Ruslan and Natalia, it was exactly her who got to the finale, while Ruslan and Natalia didn't.
    - In the last week, Ksenia won the challenge which gave her 2-kg bonus. At the last weigh-in, she lost 4 kilos, with 2 added as a bonus, so the percentage of her weigh loss in last week was massive, over 8%.
    - Ksenia left the camp of the Biggest Loser with 69 kilos, which is the new record (previous record belonged to Yulia Fomina, who left with 71 kilos).
    - On the stage, at the finale, Ksenia's boyfriend made a proposal to her (after 8 years of them living together and even having a daughter).
    - Never fell below the yellow line, she shares this record with Yulia Fomina.

    Alla Repyanchuk
    RUNNER-UP
    Team: GREEN
Starting weight: 148 kg (326 lbs)
Finale weight: 79 kg (174 lbs)
    Weight loss: 46,62%

    TRIVIA:
    - Lost more weight than any other woman in the history of the Ukrainian TBL at the camp (the previous record holder, again, was Yulia Fomina with 47 kilos).
    - Was the first contestant to cross the rope between two skyscrapers in the last week, which, supposedly, tempted a lot of viewers to give their votes for her.

    Aleksandr Repyanchuk
    5-TH UKRAINIAN BIGGEST LOSER
    Team: GREEN
Starting weight: 148 kg (326 lbs)
Finale weight: 59 kg (130 lbs)
    Weight loss: 60,13%

    - Has set the world record of weight loss in TBL show, taking it from Rachel Frederickson.
    - The lightest male contestant at the finale in the history of Ukrainian TBL.
    - In week 1 wanted to leave the competition and withdrew from the challenge, which gave his family a 2-kilo penalty at the weigh-in. Then, however, he changed his mind and got stronger with each new week, and even won a couple of challenges (quite difficult challenges).

So, this was 5th Ukrainian season of The Biggest Loser show. A lot of records and antirecords. This is also the first time that two women and one man made up the final three, with all previous times it being either two men and one woman, or three men. This is also the first time in four consecutive years that in a choice between a man and a woman for the third place in the finale, Ukrainian audience chose woman.

You also may have noticed that there were only two guys from the orange team on the photos. Unfortunately, the oldest brother, 52-year Igor Paschinskij, the heaviest contestant of the season (193 kg or 425 lbs), died because of a medical mistake on 31 August, during the period between his elimination from the TBL camp and the finale. He spent 13 weeks in camp and lost 37 kilos. At the finale, when Andrei and Sascha got to the scene and demonstrated their results, the organizators showed a 3-minute video in memory of Igor, with all audience then standing up and applausing in the sign of commemoration.

Interesting contrasts as always, in the style of the show and the contestants.

We are all hoping you are OK, given what has been going on in eastern Ukraine. Very glad to hear from you again.

Were fans very upset with the contestants because so many seemed to lose not that much?

Not too much. You see, the season was quite kind, with almost no scandals or unpleasant alliances voting out strong contestants because of them being a threat (for example, in year 2014, although Yulia, the winner, looked great, a lot of people were very unhappy to see her, and hated her to win the season because of her antagonism with a few of popular and beloved other contestants who were eliminated in the process by her and the alliance she created; and despite the results were better in average than in this season, there were more contestants to cause negative reactions from the audience because of their behavior and strategies). This caused the tolerant receptions of the results.

Mostly negative reactions were directed at Anna from the yellow team (being the key contestant in her team, she got rid only of 15 kilos); at two pink sisters, Tatiana and Olga (they came to the show for their kids, but shed their weight very slowly, got eliminated in the first half of the season, and didn't lose anything at home, and Tatiana even gained); and at the Roman from the aqua family (because he quitted the competition; "dragged" with himself both of his aunts, one of which was the heaviest female contestant of the season; and himself lost almost nothing).

As for yellow Georgij, he was not that fat in the beginning and looked o.k. at the finale. And Yurij had very poor circumstances for losing weight, serving at the ATO-Zone. Pink Yulia, in contrast to her sisters, showed at least C-grade result, although was the very first person to be voted off; this somehow softed the reactions to her weight loss. Aqua Miroslava shed not so much weight, but everyone felt sympathetic to her, admitting the fact that it might have been really difficult for her to lose weight on the outside. Not so many people were angry at purple Valeriy either, because he openly said that came to the show because of his wife and daughter, didn't care too much about his own weight (which, frankly speaking, is not critical) and felt okay.

The rest of contestants were met mostly with positive reactions.

By the way, the yellow couple adopted a few children during the autumn, which caused a lot of people to divide them as personalities and as contestants of TBL. "They are bad contestants, but good people", as someone said.

Here in the US the producers of the show want everyone to be as successful as possible (yes it is for ratings) so they make sure that the at home contestants have access to the trainers via phone etc... to get workout plans, they have access to the nutritionists to help with their food plans, and they have access to producers of the show to help be cheerleaders for them. In fact many contestants complain about the lack of support once the season is over. Does this also happen with your show?

Sure thing. The contestants have free (i mean money-free) access to the gym, they get support both from the trainers there and from their TBL trainers. From nutritionists either.

Some say that Anita (female trainer) doesn't support the contestants too much after they leave the ranch, she only calls and checks the business and meets with them one or two times.

Igor (one of the male trainers) is said to be more supportive with his trainees after they leave the camp and even after the finale is shot. For example, Natascha, the heaviest female contestant from season 4, moved to Kyiv soon after her elimination, where Igor lives, and trained under his surveillance.

And Viatcheslav, the other male trainer, is said to pay a lot of attention to his trainees. This year, he even invited brown and green team (both teams were trained by him this season and were the last two families to remain in the camp) to Vinnitsa, his home town, to train there, close to him. And all the guys (except for Ksenia from the brown team, she was not the part of the real Karpenko family, she had her own family to take care of and remained at home) were very glad to accept the invitation and went there. They trained under Viatcheslav's surveillance for two months before the finale (well, did some other joyful things too - ice skating rinks, eating suschi etc.). Without any doubt, this contributed very much to the fact that Aleksandr, the winner, lost over 60% of his weight and set a new TBL record in the percentage of the weight loss.

In general, all Ukrainian TBL seasons lasted for 8 months. For such a poor country like Ukraine (and with so terrible circumstances as armed conflict in Donbass and the fall of economics), to film so large-scale shows like this... I think it's surprising and deserves respect that we do it. A lot of other countries with no armed conflicts and economic problem film much less such shows. TBL is not the only programm Ukraine films. We also have MasterChef, X-Factor, Cube etc.
