| Re: Jason **SPOILERS** city-by-city Guides > SEATTLE Hilary & Jason: A Touching Ceremony and Celebration in Pateros The very best weddings are full of twists, and sometimes what seems to be a problem turns out to be what makes the day special and memorable. For Hilary Buckholz-Monrean and Jason Mesnick, that element was the wind. The weather on the day of their outdoor wedding was very warm as predicted, but it was also much breezier than expected. In fact, Hilary says, "It was so windy that almost nothing could be heard of the ceremony from the guests' perspective." Some couples might have been disappointed: not Hilary and Jason. "It felt more personal because the only ones who heard the ceremony were me, Jas, and our immediate family and bridal party," she says. The wind created an air of intimacy at the altar but, admits Hilary, "It did make lighting the unity candle difficult-but it made it unique, also!" THE BRIDE Hilary Buckholz-Monrean, a student THE GROOM Jason Mesnick, a human resources recruiter THE DATE July 12 THE SCENE A destination wedding at a bed-and-breakfast A BARTENDER PLAYS MATCHMAKER Jason met Hilary through his best friend from junior high, Sam Feather. Sam was a bartender at the restaurant where Hilary worked when she wasn't busy with college courses. Sam introduced Jason to Hilary, and the two clicked. Over four years later, Hilary showed up at work for the night shift and was surprised to find Jason waiting for her, telling her he had her shift covered. After a hot-air balloon ride and nice dinner, Jason parked their car at Hilary's parents' house, in the exact same spot where they had exchanged their first "I love you" four years earlier. Jason put Rod Stewart's "You're in My Heart" on the stereo, handed Hilary a dozen long-stem roses, then got out of the car, came around to her side, opened the door, and fell to one knee. Says Hilary, "Then I heard my sister yell down from the balcony: 'What did you say?' and I yelled back, 'I said YES!'" A DESTINATION WEDDING CLOSE TO HOME The couple wanted a getaway wedding, just not so far away that family and friends would be unable to attend. Hilary's parents own land in the resort town of Chelan, and when she and Jason found Amy's Manor (a bed-and-breakfast in Pateros, very near Chelan), they knew it would be perfect. The property overlooks the valley and river, with a wide lawn for a reception tent. MATCHMAKER/OFFICIANT Hilary walked down the aisle with both her father and her stepfather. She says, "One of my dads stepped on my dress as we were starting the processional. It lightened the mood for us." The service, which Jason and Hilary wrote themselves, began with an introduction from the officiant-who was none other than Sam Feather, the one responsible for introducing the bride and groom. He was ordained on the Internet and performed the wedding ceremony, which included several Jewish traditions in honor of Jason's family heritage. When it was over, the newlyweds headed off for some alone time together on a secluded bench with a view of the river, before joining the cocktail party. HILARY'S DREAM COME TRUE The emotional toasts were the bride's favorite part of the evening. "My dad Mark started off with the most loving speech. He started to get emotional, and I ran up to help him out. It was the best moment, and then Jason joined us," Hilary says, adding, "My dad had the whole party laughing and crying at the same time." Things did not dry out when Hilary's biological dad took the stage with a special thanks to Hilary's mom and stepfather that Hilary says she had never imagined would happen. "My parents divorced when I was one," she explains, saying that she loves both of her families but that "they never really talked, until my wedding. It was a dream come true for the families to come together in such a graceful and genuine way." A MELT IN YOUR MOUTH MOTIF After more teary-but-joyful toasts from the honor attendants, the bride and groom had their first dance to an old favorite, Rod Stewart's "You're in My Heart," this time sung by Hilary's dad. (He and his band, The Pontunes, provided the music for the celebration.) An M&M motif (a playful reference to the couple's last names) ran throughout the details, from the cute M&Ms-as-bride-and-groom cake topper; to the directional posters depicting the M&M characters leading the way, hung along the route to the wedding; to the tulle bags of lavender, white, and green M&Ms that guests were given as favors. After a buffet dinner, guests sampled the chocolate and vanilla wedding cake-as well as a traditional Norwegian wedding cake baked by Hilary's aunt. "There was not a bite left," reports Hilary. SWEET-SMELLING GETAWAY As the evening drew to a close, Jason tossed Hilary's garter, which was caught by Sam, their good friend and ceremony officiant. His girlfriend caught Hilary's bouquet. Then the bride and groom took off in a Volkswagen Cabriolet, amid a shower of tossed lavender. --Lisa Carse Photography © Clare Marie Photography ![]() |

| Re: Jason **SPOILERS** Here's some more from another wedding profile about him: ABOUT JASON I was born in 1976 and raised in Cleveland until age four when I moved to Knoxville, TN. I lived there until age eight when I moved to Seattle. I graduated from Lake Washington H.S. in 1994 then I received my degree in Psychology in 1998 from University of Washington. I have a twenty-two year old brother, Larry and a twenty-eight year old brother, Sean. My mom, Irene, and her husband, Elliott, live in Redmond, WA. My dad, Dennis, lives in San Diego. I, too, have a cat named Maddie! It looks like he and Hilary got married on 7/12/03. I knew of his younger brother Larry too who was good friends with my cousin and went to a different high school. I also graduated from UW in 2000 so maybe I had known him in college too, which is another reason why he was so familiar! |
