Re: Bachelor 13-Jason MEDIA / PRESS

Just finished reading my EW this morning...

The Bullseye report, on pg 70 has Melissa completely missing, well, the bullseye...

"The Bachelor's Melissa: You were just humiliated in front of 17 million people. Maybe you shouldn't volunteer to be humiliated in front of another 23 million people. In sequins."

eek!

I think Megan and RS should just get it over with and just hook-up.

Apparently they can't get enough of each other...

Too funny with the Natalie/jaundice thing!

It's no surprise that RS really can't stand the show. I haven't watched in years, and did due to Jason's story from The Bachelorette and I am glad I did, because of the great women that we got to know. I'm glad I watched and will be looking forward to Jillian's season.

Bachelor Creator Defends Jason Mesnick, Molly Malaney

For a week, the celeb gossip universe has been obsessed with The Bachelor's "After The Final Rose" special, which some perceived as pure public humiliation.

While the show's season finale and the reunion special were shown back-to-back, six weeks of real time had elapsed between the finale, when Jason Mesnick chose Melissa Rycroft as his bride, and the special, during which he announced that he had changed his mind and professed feelings instead for runner-up Molly Malaney.

As Rycroft fought back tears, and as Mesnick turned to Malaney, many fans became enraged, decrying Mesnick as a "jackass," "playboy" and "bastard."

This particular chapter of reality TV struck some as a little too real.

Yet The Bachelor creator and executive producer Mike Fleiss says the March 2 spectacle reflected not the worst, but the very best of reality TV.

Jason Mesnick and Molly Malaney

"I'm not really surprised by this, it's just a sign that the show is working," he told Time magazine. "That's really your job, to create television that the whole country will sit down at one time and watch together."

"Honestly, I really don't see the difference between [Jason Mesnick] dumping Molly in New Zealand and then dumping Melissa [weeks later] in Glendale."

Some say the difference is that Malaney knew there was a chance she could get kicked off the show during the competition, while Rycroft's departure occurred long after she had already been picked as the winner and gotten engaged.

But Fleiss insists Mesnick's actions came as no shock to Melissa.

In the weeks leading up to the special, Fleiss said he started to hear word from other producers on the show that Rycroft and Mesnick were not getting along.

Two weeks before the reunion, Fleiss heard Mesnick was still interested in Molly Malaney - whom Fleiss had approached about starring in The Bachelorette (third-place finisher Jillian Harris would eventually be tapped for that role).

All of of which set the stage for the most unpredictable "After the Final Rose" event in The Bachelor history - as host Chris Harrison accurately hyped it.

Opting to film the show without a live audience for secrecy reasons, and unsure of how Malaney would respond to Mesnick's affections, Fleiss said there was plenty of uncertainty when cameras rolled - just not when it came to Rycroft.

"She knew they were essentially finished before walking out on stage," Fleiss said of Rycroft, who debuted last night on Dancing with the Stars. "But doing it for real, making it official and handing back the ring caused real emotions."

In various interviews, as well as in e-mails between Jason and Melissa that were leaked to the press last week, The Bachelor star blamed the producers for some of the emotional fallout surrounding his choice of Molly Malaney.

Specifically, Mesnick claimed numerous times he was obligated to dump Rycroft in front of the cameras. But Fleiss says that's only half the story:

"We didn't want Jason to necessarily spill the beans prior to taping, to keep it as real as possible. But he's a good guy and didn't conceal anything - he let her know before that show that he didn't think this was going to work."

Fleiss seems to be basking in the buzz of the past week, but he also claims the emotional outcry that's accompanied this season's Bachelor denouement is a sign of the passion this new wave of reality TV contestants is bringing to the set.

Before, he says, it was nearly impossible to recruit plausible contestants, or even hosts, to reality TV projects. But the genre has grown increasingly mainstream, and producers have been able to find people who are not just exhibitionists.

And that, he says, is the true impact of Jason Mesnick.

"Believe me, I've seen Bachelor couples stay together who really didn't care about each other," he said. "Some of them feel an obligation to the show to try to be a couple, since we spent literally millions of dollars as their matchmakers."

But rather than playing to the expectations of producers, or viewers, says Fleiss, Mesnick dared to reveal his true emotions, and to acknowledge the uncomfortable truth that love is not always a programmable enterprise.

"More than any other Bachelor in history, he was committed to love and to truly following his heart even though he knew he was going to have to go through hell to do it," Fleiss said. "It's really a romantic notion, that he sacrificed chunks of his popularity to at least try to be with the woman he loved."

'Bachelor' candidate from Sewickley Hills goes off script
By Bobby Cherry
TRIBUNE-REVIEW NEWS SERVICE

Megan Parris is bleeping mad about her portrayal as a foul-mouthed crybaby on "The Bachelor."

"It's important for people to understand that what they saw on TV was a character," said Parris, 25, of Sewickley Hills and an assistant coach of the Quaker Valley High School girls lacrosse team. "It wasn't me. It was not at all indicative of who I am as a person. It was complete misrepresentation of who Megan Parris is."

Parris, a 2001 Quaker Valley graduate, said that parts of the ABC reality show are bogus and that producers edited scenes to make her look bad. She spent 2 1/2 weeks filming in Los Angeles before she was booted in the fourth episode of the show, in which two dozen women compete for an engagement to a handsome bachelor.

story continues below

"There's nothing real about it," she said of the show's trademark "confessionals," in which contestants talk to the camera about the latest goings-on.

"It is scripted," she said. "They basically will call you names, berate you, curse at you until they get you to say what they want you to say."

Both ABC and Warner Bros., the studio that produces "The Bachelor," had no comment.

But during a teleconference call this month, executive producer Mike Fleiss denied that this season was scripted.

"We don't do that," he said. "We've never done that and we never will do that."

The show came under scrutiny after this season's finale when "Bachelor" Jason Mesnick dumped his original choice, Melissa Rycroft, for runner-up Molly Malaney.

"You know, the good thing about unscripted television is that it's unpredictable, and that's what this was," Fleiss said. "I mean, it caught us off guard, caught the viewers off guard and, you know, that's why unscripted television works."

Parris sees it otherwise.

"It's really hurtful," Parris said. "After I watched the first episode, I literally wanted the earth to swallow me. They made me feel like they were going to make me out to be America's sweetheart. I went into the experience completely naive and trusting and vulnerable. I let myself get completely manipulated."

Parris' on-screen drama and potty-mouth tendencies were the result of editing, she said.

"They chopped up pieces of conversation and did voiceovers," she said. "So they'd show a flash of my face and then they'd flash to something else, but I'd still be talking. So they chopped up different parts of conversations to string them along to make them sound like a sentence. But it's nothing I would ever say."

In network promotions for the show, Parris was seen crying and using foul language, something she said she doesn't do. She admitted to swearing early on, but said later edits did not actually represent swear words.

"From there on out, I was bleeped almost every episode," she said.

Parris said her sister hasn't spoken to her since the show first aired in January. And she's worried what new players on the lacrosse team and their parents will think of her.

"So they know, 'OK, my daughter's going to be a freshman, she's going to play for this girl. This is going to be her coach, we're going to watch her on TV.'

"They used my real name and my real hometown, but created a character out of me that did not accurately represent me at all," Parris said.

Jessica Garavaglia, the head lacrosse coach at Quaker Valley, did not respond to e-mails seeking comment.

Re: Bachelor 13-Jason MEDIA / PRESS

ABC has announced it's Fall 2009 schedule. The Bachelor isn't listed for September.

But it is scheduled to run Mondays between DWTS seasons, like Jasson's season. Two hours per episode, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. eastern, with Castle following at 10 p.m.

That means the premiere will be on January 4, and the finale on March 1, 2010.

If Jillian's season does well enough in the ratings, we'll get another season of The Bachelorette next May.

Jasson's The Bachelor 13 finished 24th in total viewership (averaging 11.5 million viewers) for the entire 2008-2009 TV season. Behind Cold Case and Eleventh Hour, but ahead of The Amazing Race 13 & 14 and Lost. It was ABC's fifth best performing show after both DWTS shows, Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy. Only American Idol and Survivor did better in the reality genre.

Is there nothing on Jason and Molly? I can't believe the media hasn't done any updates, especially now that the Bachelorette is running.

I saw something on them over the weekend, on one of those gossip news shows. All it said was that Jason, Ty, and Molly were in the Caribbean for the opening of a resort.
