Jackson women get a chance at 'Bachelor,' fame
Auditions for reality TV show being held at Smith-Wills Stadium
One of Elizabeth Doughty's favorite TV shows pits 25 women against each other for one man's love.

That's the theory, at least.

"Some of the girls probably really do fall in love," said Doughty, 25, of Jackson, a fan of ABC's reality series The Bachelor. "Honestly, if I were going on the show, I believe it would be because you get to go to really neat places, and it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience."

On Friday, capturing that rare experience becomes a possibility for single women in the Jackson area. They are invited to audition for the series, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson.

In connection with that event, Dan Keith, manager of the stadium's Left Field Sports Grill, is staging The Ultimate Bachelorette Makeover starting at 8 p.m. Thursday at Smith-Wills. The session, which will include free manicures, pedicures and style tips from experts, offers free admission for women; admission is $5 for men. Keith also plans to offer live entertainment and drink specials.

To audition for The Bachelor, hopefuls must be at least 21 years of age. They must also be unmarried, which disqualifies Doughty. But that doesn't disqualify her from being a fan.

"For me, it's the social aspect," said Doughty, who also watches ABC's related show, The Bachelorette.

"Since it started, we always have Girls' Night Out. My friends and I get together, drink wine and watch the show. And critique the girls on it."

That's the routine, too, for Jana Bell of Jackson. "Anywhere from three to 10 of us watch it together, have hors d'oeuvres and wine, and pick apart every one of the women," Bell said.

The pickin's are slim for The Bachelor right now; the last episode of the season aired May 12, while its companion show The Bachelorette had its season premiere on Monday. But, of course, The Bachelor will be back, said Lacey Pemberton, the casting director for both shows.

"The show will tape in mid-October and will air in early January," Pemberton said by phone from Burbank, Calif.

Auditions like the one in Jackson are being held across the country for 25 Bachelor prospects. "We usually get a couple of hundred at each event," Pemberton said.

In Jackson, the auditions will be handled by WAPT-Channel 16, the local ABC affiliate.

"Staff members and volunteers will ask the women five or six questions and we'll film them while they're being questioned," said Eula Forte, WAPT senior account manager. "We expect it to be a huge day."

Each episode of The Bachelor attracts around 9 million viewers, according to some of the latest Nielsen figures. The show is particularly popular with women, Pemberton said, "because I believe they love seeing a great-looking guy, especially a knight in shining armor, which is the way we present him.

"Women are also curious about other women, how they react in a certain situation.

"And the women on the show, I believe, all share a kind of optimism that you can find someone you're simpatico with. It could be in the grocery store, or anywhere.

"So why not do something like this?"

Bell theorized that it's also about "competition" and "the potential to be famous, at least for a little while."

Joanna Gaston of Brandon, an occasional viewer, doesn't believe it's all about "getting married and finding a family. ... It does give some people out there in TV Land a small bit of hope, though," said Gaston, 24.

"I guess it could work.

"If you can't find somebody on your own, have TV producers and all of America help you find that someone.

"That's your prerogative."

I am not certain whether this is a planned publicity event or not; but as a writer I cannot help but notice the "journalistic language" used by the reporter/writer of this article. He or she seems to highlight the very points that had been fueling much debate over her participation and eventual victory in the show.

I assume "the fanning of the flame" has spilled over to the media.
