The game metaphor is certainly predominant in the story.

Thanks, Secret, for the scoop and also for reaffirming my gut reaction to JP.

Yeah, that article totally left me with a real warm fuzzy feeling about JP. He sounds like he really found 'true love' didn't he? :rolleyes

Thanks for posting that, Secret! Makes me like JP less & less... :phhht I don't like his whole competitive "life is a game" attitude. I can't believe Jen kept him till the final 2 or 3...

That's amusing... as that is the perspective that you get from any business person that was a major athlete. I see people like him day in and day out at my company and don't take the "life is a game" mentality as a negative. You know what? Life IS a game and if you can approach it in that manner it's much healthier.

Ahhhh... the many sports cliches that get brought about in corporate communications would drive you guys nuts.

So, Merritt controlled what he could, starting with his interaction with the other bachelors. When they asked how his dates went, he always told them things had gone wrong and he just didn't think it was going to work.

The reality: the dates were great.

"They didn't think I had a chance," Merritt said of the bachelors. "By the end of the show, I thought ... I had all these guys' cards in my hand. I knew exactly all of their feelings. They had no clue about mine."
When I read this I had the utmost of respect for John Paul's maturity in realizing the need to hide his true feelings. Laying your feelings on the table leaves yourself open for someone to take advantage of them and, let's face it, that's exactly what the other guys would do. Look at how the other guys reacted to Stu, look at how they make fun of Fabrice... and the same thing happened in previous seasons. Look at what they (and us on the board) did to Heather and any other man/woman that lays their feelings out there. So... to JP for being smart enough to not give the other guys fodder for ridicule.

I agree with you Broadway! JP was very smart in how he handled the other men. In fact, wasn't it Fab that said JP and Josh would be the two men NOT picked in last week's ceremony? He's good! One would not necessarly think these are tactics for finding love, but apparently he did something right if he is in the final 2.

Good points, Broadway and Blondie. To give JP some credit, he didn't say that's how he treated Jen, just how he treated the guys. But his 'waiting to kiss Jen' comment on the show was a little bit disturbing to me--as I recall he didn't say he was waiting to kiss her because he thought she would want that but because it was the opposite of what the other guys would do.

I'm with ya, Broadway. I prefer to keep this in context and not project too much. Gamesmanship doesn't have to be a negative. He may apply true negative gamesmanship to every aspect of his life, but not necessarily. This article doesn't make that statement IMO and I won't make that jump based on this----though surely Fleiss would! I admit, there were a couple things in that interview that made me crinkle my nose, but only taken out of context. Cheating & fouling & fighting with your brothers playing basketball in the driveway is pretty normal sibling interaction. Lots of stuff said in that article is completely acceptable in certain contexts so I'll just leave them in the context they were presented in. That article doesn't move my opinion of ZJP in any way.

But, to put that a little clearer, he did it because it would set him apart from the other guys. Is that so wrong?

In purely technical terms, I guess that isn't a foul. But if I were the woman in question, I would at least call a time out.

He loved to compete and expected to win.

Still does.

Now, though, the game is quite a bit different.
Think like a journalist -- this story is written for the SPORTS page - it needs to have a sports perspective. It needs to be interesting for people who read the sports page and interesting for those who remember the good old days with John Paul Merritt leading a local high school hoops team to the championship.

I liked JP & Jen's 1-1 date. I saw him flirting & being cute. Did you hear him say "there's a first time for everything" or something like that when she asked if he had ever had a couples massage? I felt there was a lot of innuendo in that - I figured about him being young, etc. He had a huge smile on his face.

I may yet decide I'm not a fan of his but for now I really like him.
