It's all in the interview process, based on their applications. That's probably the hardest part of the whole season. And to make sure they get a few level headed ones to attract the Bach, they probably have head-hunters out there looking for girls (or guys). But, again, to I think they hire an F4 or an F1? no I don't.

eta - I gotta take that back, Shayne was a hire - probably not for F1 position, but just for dram, Matt had stars in his eyes for Holleywood though, so he chose her

I don't think they do just hire 25-30 random people and have at it. I believe this is where the 'casting' comes into play. They hire a myriad of individuals each with different personalities and qualities that suit the storylines they have in mind. Folks dont' think TPTB know about Vienna's and Gia's backgrounds - hogwash. They know way more than the average viewer and they have interviews and call backs and get a lot of information in order to select the right person for the role. Of course this is just my opinion.

I think so too. I think the selection process is key to the season. They probably knew Jake was going to be on the boring side, so they decided the drama needed to come from the girls in the house, so they selected a few drama girls to get them all riled up....Vienna provided it, so she became the "star" of the show.... real drama was probably a bonus when he chose her as F1 (default IMO) The drama has now left the actual show and is taking place on the internet and now in the press.... and Fliess is going "cha-ching"

There obviously is some type of formula - because every season comes with Pageant girls/models/actresses/professionals/good girls/drama queens - although I'd love to know how they flush these people out for the role

And I also distinctly remember, way back before we knew it was jake, one of our long time FORT members floated the idea that they would probably get a number of girls with 'questionable' pasts. so even if it isn't scripted in the truest sense, we knew going in that these issues were going to get raised if Jake was the bachelor.

I know of at least two people that were excused just before the meet and greet because they refused to read a script.

Also I came upon this old email message I received from someone who was close to a contestant on the show in a past season. This was in response to my sharing parts of Tina's (Baldwin's season) blog with her:

That first night experience sounds very similar to what my friend described. The producers telling her what to do, trying to get her to do or say stuff and having no real time with the Bachelor. I can't believe how poorly they treat these women when they are making the franchise so much money.

right - I dont think we're saying that they're not required to perform certain tasks - just that the roles aren't completely scripted. Like we know they do PIs til they get the girls to say certain things and they drive them around in limos until they cry.......

I believe it was perhaps jlccaz who noted where a fruitless preshow effort had been made to connect the show with the Playboy Mansion. One of our posters at one point in the past mentioned she had a friend who was going through the psych evaluations stage of processing, and I particularly noted one time an insider's comment that "We didn't even have to manipulate her." When all of the discussion was happening concerning Ed's computer /work time and leaving, we were given Tanner's remark that they all had different contracts. (Implication was that Ed's contract read differently in order to get him on the show and even possibly to lend itself to the storyline as Ed was allowed to work on the computer and electronic devices for 4 hours a day when no one else ( to our knowledge) has ever much been able to do anything but concentrate on the Bach/ette.
These things plus other things that have come out over the seasons lead me to believe that they control as much of the show as possible but allow for changes as they come up. They know what they have in mind when they start, and they shoot for that. What it ends up might be different, but it simply isn't happenstance to start with.

Right - and if they were "hired" to play that role, they wouldn't have a problem with it, now would they?? just sayin'......

Does anyone think that Vienna's edit will soften starting tonight or will it continue the way it's been to provide the shock value when Jake picks loudmouth Vienna over quiet Tenley.
