I know where she is coming from. My dad even coached my brother's baseball teams but neither one of my parents came to any of my basketball or softball games in H.S. That doesn't mean we aren't close though. It sounds weird when you're looking in and it can be hard to understand. To be honest I never understood it, but I'm here to say that it CAN happen.
