Obviously, he wasn't that unselfish. He was scared that if he let Molly go for a few months, she would have found another guy. So he says to TPTB -- gotta break up with Melissa. And once that's said, *then* it has to air.
He put the squirmy feeling in his pants ahead of the feelings of someone else he had claimed to want to love and protect (whether or not he actually ever meant that, he did say it to Melissa). And, in my opinion, he put the squirmy feeling ahead of his kid, as well, who will find out about all of this in years to come and have to deal with it in some way.
Jason's too old to behave that immaturely, seems to me.
