| Re: What's up with that edit??!! My take on Hilltopmom's post about Jillian is that she's a foodie. She can't leave that part of herself behind when she's on The Bachelor any more than she can leave it behind when she's working. It's part of who she is, and why she does what she does. I wouldn't see it as a negative comment, but just an observation of some facts: She's interested in food and food environments, and there is nothing wrong with that being a part of her "character" on the show. |

| Re: What's up with that edit??!! Can't we all agree they all like the limelight to a certain extent to be on this show? I would bet over 50% of the girls don't even apply and are instead recruited. Apart from the questionable editing I mean who wouldn't want to do this show in your twenties. Lavish dates, goody bags, meeting a fun group of girls, being on TV, free vacation, maybe meeting a guy who turns out to be really great, and making all your ex's jealous LOL. |

| Re: What's up with that edit??!! [quote=atem;3307610;]I'm no expert, but I believe those are two completly different mental issues. I don't know. Haven't posted since Brad's season as I did not watch The Bachelorette. I have, however, been reading the posts this season. I am a psychologist and have been doing therapy in private practice for close to 20 years. I agree with the posters who suggested that Jillian's disclosure about her mom's depression provides us with a great educational opportunity. For that reason, I wanted to clarify a few things. Major Depression (aka unipolar depression) and bipolar disorder are similar in that they are both classified as mood disorders. And with both there is an interplay between biological predisposition and environmental factors. Further, a first degree relative of someone suffering from major depression is more likely to experience depression than someone who does not have a family history of it. Good news is that depression is very treatable and generally has a good prognosis. While bipolar disorder is not always as successfully treated, with the proper medicine and therapy it is very possible for the individual to live a full and enriched life. While it is certainly not appropriate for me to speak to whether Jillian shows any symptoms of depression, I will say that, of course, I would expect her to be effected by her mom's depression as I would if her mother suffered any other type of chronic illness. And that effect doesn't have to be negative. Indeed, that "strength" in Jillian often commented on by Jason, particularly her proclivity to stay strong for the other girls is likely a function of her learning to do that with her mom. Such a dynamic can foster the development of a strong, independent and self-sufficient individual which is clearly how Jillian appears to me. The danger is such a scenario can be that the person gets so good at focusing on, if not prioritizing, the other person's feelings that he/she can become programmed to neglecting his/her own. (Hence, for example, Jason's admonition to Jillian to prioritize herself.) And, now, I will go back to reading the other posts. I will save my comments disagreeing with those posts that describe Melissa as immature and throwing "jealous fits" for another time. |

I agree with you..only you said it more eloquently than I would have! I am a therapist as well. I saw the dynamic of her mother's depression as perhaps her reason for being so independent, being a caretaker of others, and not opening up to others (keeping "family secrets"). The other danger is that she could become so independent that she won't fully let anyone else in. I also have a feeling that I would agree with your view about the way people are describing Melissa! | |

| Re: What's up with that edit??!! However, Jillian does share that family secret (which I'm sure her parents ok'd). So, she does open up to Jason.

| Re: What's up with that edit??!! I'm not making ANY assumptions about Jillian herself. I don't know enough about Jillian to make an assumption. I was merely suggesting that it was a possibility when the issue of her having a big "secret" was broached. However, when it comes to depression, bipolar disorder, and similar types of mental illnesses, I know for a fact (not an assumption) that they are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain and that they run in families - meaning, family members are predisposed, not absolutely guaranteed to inherit the problem. |
