Ahh, but I have 2 kids and a dog, as well as am tall and am married to a 6'5" man so we have my gas-guzzling SUV that I refuse to give up. I didn't say I wasn't materialistic in my own way... but, yes, if we couldn't afford the car, I'd give it up in a heartbeat and such would be life.

I agree with you , I am probably pretty much like you myself. But looking at this particular situation , I know at Shayne's age (22) , I didn't have thoses things. I think age is a factor here. He is young and just starting to pave his financial future. She seems to be accustomed to more of a grand lifestyle . I think this would be a concern to the average guy. I think they are worlds apart in every aspect . Both great people , but too different. JMO

I agree Lynn, Shayne will grow up someoday and her priorities will change (as we know) , But will Matt see it, that way in making his choice? She said she isnt ready to get married, he said ,he is.. He dosen't like high maintenance , she admitted she was.. I don't see Shayne as someone who would be happy giving up her lifestyle just yet, if anything I think she would want to continue that , no matter who she marries.. Oh , by the way, I'm a Taurus too...

Just because she collects shoes, watches and accessories doesn't make her materialistic. Materialism, to me, means an obsession with owning things. If she's a collector of shoes and purses, so what?

I'll bet many people on the board collect something and probably own MANY of those things. What about comic book collectors. Would you say they were materialistic? How about someone who collects boyd's bears? What about people who own 200+ movies... Are they materialistic?

I don't think owning a lot of shoes makes Shayne materialistic any more than I think Jay Leno owning a lot of cars makes him materialistic. Perhaps we should look at her as a collector instead of a glutton.

Frankly I disagree...I think both Jay and Shayne are materialistic.....and I enjoy them both. By your example, I suppose Imelda Marcos was a shoe collector also. Thanks

LOL. This discussion about materialism is making me crack up. American's by our nature, culture and upbringing are incredibly materialistic. We pretty much stink of it. The fact that we have two (or more) of anything - two cars, two tvs, two radios, two watches, two pairs of sun glasses, two bathrooms, two winter coats, two sets of pots & pans, two pairs (of cream color!) boots - makes us materialistic. The fact that we own one or more of anything we don't actually "need" makes us materialistic. The more we own of something - of anything - the more materialistic we are. The fact that we buy new and better when what we have is sufficient is what makes us materialistic. It doesn't have anything to do with being able to buy more or better because we can afford it, it has to do with whether we actually "need" it. America is the biggest capitalistic society in the world and we pride ourselves on it - and you can't have capitalism unless you have a public that is willing to be materialistic. /rant

So, yeah, when Shayne says she likes shoes, handbags, sun glasses and cars - materialistic. Whether she would give them up for the right person, if she had to, we don't know. Whether or not Matt's willing to take a chance on either her affording to keep herself in the lifestyle she's become accustomed , that's she'll give it up because he can't afford it or that he'll find a way to manage it - we'll have to wait and see.

Amanda and Chelsea appear to live on more of a similar materialistic level as Matt, so it just isn't as much of an issue with them.
