While I think it's safe to say that Shayne finds money and possessions important, I don't think we can say she finds them to be the most important things in life. I realize I'm getting highly technical here, but Matt could always say later that his comment was taken too literally and he does not find Shayne to be a truly materialistic person. I'm not saying I think Shayne is F1, I'm just playing devil's advocate here.
Exactly. I'm giving her a pass on the shoes on the grounds that the expenditures are meaningless to her. It's not like she ate peanut butter and crackers for dinner every night for six months in order to afford those boots.

But that is where the problem of the Matt and Shayne love story hits a roadblock...he can not afford the lifestyle she is accustomed to....

maybe her trust is big enough....(in which case maybe she should be concerned about his motives)
maybe he will become famous from the show...

but Matt as he came on the show could not afford Shayne...

But my point was that he DID bring up the word materialistic his his interview, that is all. What Matt meant by it is anyone's guess. I think someone can be nice and care about people but at the same time be materialistic too. Shayne has her list of her top 5 things: cars, shoes, handbags, sunglasses, and watches -- which are all, well, material things!!

I was actually putting the blame on MATT here, not Shayne, because if in fact Shayne is his F1 he is doing her no favors by describing his chosen one as not be materialistic! It is going to haunt him and come back and bite him in the bum!!

I remember being her age...really, I *can* remember back that far ...and my focus was not only saving money, but, it was all about the clothes, matching shoes, matching purses and jewellry...oh, and raising two daughters.

Ten years later...uhmm...okay 20! those are no longer my priorities. With four kids, two grown, two at home, life has changed and if I'm actually wearing something that matches while fulfilling my role as taxi driver...well, that's a GREAT day for me

So, to me, the fact that these are her 'apparent' priorities is not a big deal and not a stretch given her age.

But words have more than one definition. I used dictionary.com and this is one of the definitions that they had for materialistic: concerned with material things.

I am sure to some extent that all the girls there are concerned w/material things, but how many of them bring a suitcase full of just shoes and boots, plus own up to the fact that they own 400 pairs of shoes. That is bordering on gluttony.......

You got that right. I would never have even been seen unless I'd showered and put my makeup on back then. Now, being far more comfortable in my own skin, and definitely improving with age, life takes a shift in where you direct your energy.

While I think it's completely normal for a girl Shayne's age to be collecting shoes, watches...etc., though she is definitely doing that in abundance, I also think that she has given us a glimpse, in what she says, that one of her goals, and eventual priorities, is to fall in love, get married and have a stable home life. So, I really don't think she's entirely materialistic because you wouldn't normally include a goal of stability and marriage in the same sentence with someone whose focus is on the material things in life because a successful marriage and stabile home life require complete focus. Someone who is into material things wouldn't necessarily be capable of giving that focus because it would be directed at acquiring things.

Re: Bachelor 12 Media Thread ~ Spoilers

This is just my opinion and yeah I do like to read into things so - the comment by Matt:"Just going through those points with them, you know, where it really helped out. And you know, it made me realize that - I guess it's just, you know, in the early part of a relationship, you have that buzz, and that isn't always there. You need a depth and substance to get through all the hurdles and barriers that life throws at you and I think I was just getting - you know, I was aware of that, but just getting that across to me again was really helpful."

Tells me that in discussing his choices with his parents, he was reminded that the strong physical attraction he felt for maybe one particular girl, was not enough. He should also remember which woman's life values, beliefs and goals fit in with his. I also think he feels physical attraction towards several, but possibly is more attracted to one. I think his parents help put a balancing perspective to his emotional turmoil and I can't help but feel/believe he is sincere in looking for a partner and not seeking to launch a Hollywood career. I like him and pretty sure I know who his choice is - based on this comment.

She did tell him she wasn't ready to get married right now. Something about the age of thirty or something like that.

I agree lynn7--the fact that she wants to fall in love and have a normal family life suggest to me that the girl has some substance there.

That's what I was trying to say but you said it better.

I don't think anyone who knows me would ever think of me as shallow or matieralistic but, when I was her age, I collected very similar things that Shayne does. Sure, today, I like nice things in my home but I'm a Taurus so I'm allowed and I don't go overboard. Family and relationships are far more important and I can see that in Shayne, too. Once she gets older I can completely see her as giving up these fetishes, hobbies, or whatever they are called, and transferring the interest in those things to family and relationships. It just seems so clear to me that she would
