New ‘Bachelor’ is a Texas born-and-bred hunk


If you’ve seen previews for ABC’s new season of “The Bachelor,” you know one fact producers are definitely not trying to hide: He’s hot.

The newest bachelor for the “fi nd-amissus” dating show is 34-year-old Brad Womack of Austin, Texas. Perhaps you’ve seen the ads featuring Womack soaping himself up in the shower. Or making breakfast without a shirt on.

Viewers can rate his hotness for themselves when the 11th edition of “The Bachelor” premiers at 8:30 p.m. Monday on ABC, channel 8.

Some critics have called Womack the “sexiest bachelor ever,” a title that makes him laugh.

“I don’t know how to take that, honestly,” Womack said in a recent teleconference interview. “Yeah, it is laughable. It’s a great title. But it’s probably more laughable for my guy friends than anything.”

Things you should know about Womack:


He’s a self-made entrepreneur who owns four lucrative bars in Austin with his brothers.


At 19, he left Texas State University to work in oil fields for several years. He eventually saved enough money to open his first bar when he was 28.


And he swears he’s not vain enough to go shirtless 24/7.

“Quite honestly, I don’t walk around with my shirt off that much — especially when cooking breakfast,” he said.

Not that he doesn’t work on his chiseled body, however.

“I work out quite a bit and eat very healthy,” he said. That means lifting weights at least five days a week and running three times a week.

“I’m almost a little narcissistic about it,” he said.

But he’s also not on the show for stardom, he said. He’s looking for love.

Specifically, with a down-to-earth but beautiful, sweet, honest, loyal girl-next-door type, he said.

Turning to a reality show to find a woman may seem like an unnecessary step for a hunk who runs several bars in a college town, right?

“People would think it’s so easy to meet people in the bar business . . . but it’s just not in my nature to go up and flirt with someone when I’m working,” he said. In fact, his focus on work for the past few years has kept him from meeting the woman of his dreams.

So he’s hoping she’ll be in the pool of ABC’s 25 bachelorettes. Some of whom resort to um, zany, antics to get his attention. Such as stripping down to a bikini, or twisting into a pretzel — the very first night.

The competition between the women gets a little crazy at times, he said.

“On one hand, I was pleased to see that some of the ladies would put themselves out there like that,” he said. “But the twisting (her)self like a pretzel . . . some are willing to put themselves out there, maybe a little too out there. I like aggression, but it got a little bit different sometimes.”

Suitors should note: It might help to tell him how much you love Austin and want to live there. Womack has no plans to move to Hollywood or anywhere else, for that matter.

“Never say never, but even in the show, I explain that I have some pretty strong roots here,” he said. “I genuinely love the community of Austin, and I would love to convince anyone what a great city Austin is.”

So did he find the perfect girl-next-door, who happens to be gorgeous but low-maintenance?

Who likes the beach and wants to live in Texas?

Wait and watch, he said.

“All I can say is I’m extremely happy with the turnout of the whole thing,” Womack said.

Kansans: You're just too real for me
Look, Kansans. There are lots of you, and only one of me. So you're gonna need to slow it down with this reality show stuff.
If I had a dime for every time I'd received a tip that a Kansan/former Kansan/woulda-been-coulda-been Kansan was going to be a contestant on the latest edition of (fill in reality TV show here), I'd be rich enough to launch my own reality show.
It'd be called "Don't Displease Denise," and contestants who displeased me would be forced to clean my house and make me margaritas. The last person to displease me would get to be my friend and buy me things with her $1 million prize.
Doesn't that sound like a great show?
One problem: All the contestants would be Kansans, and then I'd really be in trouble.
As the entertainment/pop culture reporter, it's my job to report when Kansans enter the entertainment/pop culture realm. And it's been particularly busy this year.
No sooner had I finished following onetime Wichitan Phil Stacey through his "American Idol" journey than the two Haysville girls, Carol and Jessica, found their way onto "Big Brother 8."
Not long after, I got word that a Wichita kid was going to be on "Kid Nation." (Turns out he's a finalist for the second installment, should there be one, so that one's on hold.)
And now we have Jenni.
Jenni Croft is a Wichita native and former South High student who is one of 25 women appearing on the 11th installment of "The Bachelor," which starts at 9 p.m. Monday on ABC, cable Channel 10.
In the show, an Xtreme hunk -- in this case, Texas businessman Brad Womack -- gets his pick of 25 gorgeous women. Historically, it's hard to tell whether these girls are more desperate for a husband or television time, which makes it all the more interesting, in a pukey sort of way.
Jenni, 27, is a former Wichita State University cheerleader who went on to become a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. She's also been a dancer for the Miami Heat and currently is on the dance squad for the Phoenix Suns.
I've seen an advance copy of the first episode, and though I won't give everything away, I'm thinking Jenni is going to be around for a while.
I'll try to keep tabs on her, people, but I'm going to need the rest of the state to stay off reality TV until the finale.
Otherwise, I'll be very, very displeased.

I found it interesting that the blogger has already seen the first episode. Does ABC release the episodes ahead of time to the media? That would be strange.

Ariel, I found that odd too. I don't remember media sneak-peaking the first episode or at least not revealing it in the media before the show airs.
Sounds, like we can say "Jenni Does Austin" ........... oh no... I don't mean to ruffle any feathers of Jenni's friends reading this.......... I'm just teasing!
And as of now, I'd list her in my top 6 at least!

I was surprised, too, when I read it this morning. I didn't remember in previous seasons hearing about media outlets seeing advance copies. Or maybe it's like you said and they just haven't admitted it in public before now! Anyway, it doesn't seem like this columnist is a big fan of The Bachelor as she made this statement: "Historically, it's hard to tell whether these girls are more desperate for a husband or television time, which makes it all the more interesting, in a pukey sort of way."

There are people that see them before us..usually they are part ...(work for) the network in some area...in one of the affliates or something...LOST had a big problem with this last season with all their info getting out before the last couple shows....and I know E online's Kristen and the ask Austellio guy usually see shows before they air and I think others do too.....the trick is finding one that has seen the early version before it actually AIRS and is willing to risk life and limb to give out the info

I listened to the teleconference call with Brad. One of the callers from the media (can't remember who) mentioned he had seen the first episode as well.
