Scipione Borghese

Cardinal Scipione Borghese (1576-1633) was an Italian Renaissance art collector and member of the noble Borghese family.

Originally named Scipione Caffarelli, he was born in Rome, the son of Francisco Caffarelli and Ortensia Borghese, sister of Camillo Borghese, the future Pope Paul V. His father ran into financial difficulties, so Scipione's education was paid for by his Uncle Camillo. Upon Camillo's election to the papacy in 1605, he quickly conferred a cardinalship on Scipione and gave him the right to use the Borghese name and coat of arms.

In the classic pattern of papal nepotism, Cardinal Borghese wielded enormous power as the Pope's secretary and effective head of the Vatican government. On his own and the Pope's behalf he amassed an enormous fortune through papal fees and taxes, and acquired vast land holdings for the Borghese family.

Cardinal Scipione Borghese was an important art collector, with major collections of Caravaggio, Raphael, and Titian. He also bought widely from leading painters and sculptors of his day, and his commissions include two potrait busts by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

He developed a large estate and vineyard on the Pician hill in Rome into a vast garden and complex of palaces, the Villa Borghese. A major part of his art collections is preserved at the Galleria Borghese.

Cardinal Scipione Borghese died in Rome in 1633 and is buried in the Borghese chapel in Santa Maria Maggiore.

Borghese is the surname of a family of Italian noble and papal background, originating in Siena where they came to prominence in the 13th century holding official offices under the commune. The head of the family, Marcantonio moved to Rome in the 16th century and there, following the election (1605) of his son Camillo Borghese as Pope Paul V who was an unabashed nepotist, they rose in power and wealth.

By virtue of the wedding of Olimpia Aldobrandini with Paolo Borghese in 1614, the Borghese claimed the name and the legacy of the rich and papal Aldobrandini for themselves; after extended court battles, they won this recognition in 1769. Many of Paul V's official inscriptions include ROMANUS after his name, to reinforce the family's new Roman connection. Paul bestowed on his nephew the title prince of Vivero on (November 17, 1609), and Philip III of Spain conferred an additional title of prince of Suimona the following year. As a group, the Borghese became some of the largest landowners of the Roman Campagna, increasing their wealth by their strategic direct control of their properties and a concerted policy of assuming monopolies of milling grain and rights to run inns [1].

The family seat Palazzo Borghese in Rome formerly housed the Borghese art collections, which since 1903 have been established as the Galleria Borghese, located in the family's former property Villa Borghese.

Based on Cafegirl's screen caps in another thread Lorenzo doesn't feel uncomfortable giving Lisa the first real kiss on the group date. We may see him giving a real kiss to some of the other girls on the group date as well...or not.

Agnese must get her real kiss after the group date.
