Philly chef hush-hush about his 'Average Joe' hula

It's a long way from Old City to Hawaii. Especially by way of Belgium.

Sean Pashley, executive chef at Eulogy Belgian Tavern (Second and Chestnut Streets) is one of 18 frogs trying to win the princess in NBC's Average Joe: Hawaii, executive producer Andrew Glassman confirmed yesterday.

The nine-episode Hawaii - a sequel to the just-completed Average Joe - was shot over the summer on the Kohala coast and launches Jan. 5. As with the original, hunky ringers will invade paradise.

NBC won't announce the contestants or beauty queen until next week.

It's all very hush-hush, but here's what we know: The super-sized Pashley, 26, is a Northeast native and ex-football player at Archbishop Ryan High. He attended the Restaurant School in West Philly.

A couple of NBC scouts discovered the charismatic Pashley one morning while he was tending bar at Eulogy, according to tavern owner Mike Naessens.

As is standard practice in reality shows, Pashley has a confidentiality agreement that forbids him from revealing anything but his name, rank and cholesterol number.

So when Pashley took off for several weeks, he told his boss that he was doing an NBC show called The In Crowd, Naessens says. When Pashley returned, many pounds lighter, his lips were zip-locked.

At first, Naessens assumed the show was NBC's The Restaurant 2. But when Average Joe debuted Nov. 3, Naessens had a hunch.

"When Sean came back, he had lost a lot of weight. He said he was running marathons. On Average Joe, they had guys doing things they normally wouldn't do. I put two and two together."

NBC promos for Hawaii sealed the deal. Pashley is shown with a group of contestants on the beach. Still, the chef isn't talking. "When Sean wants to keep a poker face, he's outstanding," Naessens says.

Pashley is just the latest Eulogy Belgian Tavern staffer to hit the big time on the small screen. A few months ago, Upper Darby's Jamie Kennedy recruited Naessens and his waiter, Chris Topham, for a prank on the WB's Jamie Kennedy Experiment.

And Naessens' brother, Glen Naessens, a part-time Eulogy manager, was on MTV's Real World 2: Los Angeles in '93.

"I don't know if it's serendipity or something in the beer," says Naessens, 39, who named Eulogy as a tribute to his favorite pubs in Belgium: The Coffin and Sudden Death.

"We're becoming Hoppywood around here."

he lost a bunch of weight while filming the show. I wonder if it was stuff he did while still in contention, or if he started working out after getting kicked out in favor of pretty boys.

Belgian beer is fattening too. I was drinking Stella Artois a while back, and I absolutely loved it. I gained weight and didn't know why.. well, I found a site online that has calories and alcohol % of beers...ALL KINDS. Stella was the highest in all the choices of beer I drank.

I stopped drinking it, and lost the weight! whew! Maybe our buddy here partakes a lil too much at the pub!

I loved Sean! And not just because I have a "thing" for chefs. He had a great personality, was honest and has the sweetest face. He can cook me ribs anytime!!

I got really tired if hearing him talk about being overweight, and how he was in shape before, etc..etc.. Everytime they showed him, he would say something about his weight. It's sorta like the overweight comedians who always joke about themselves, it gets old, quick. Hearing about how he "used to be" fit and in shape is getting old, imho. He's shadowing his personality with being bothered about his shape.

I think he's my top choice right now....mainly because of how nice he seemed...

Unlike a few of the other contestants, he appeared to encourage his fellow "Joes" and always had something positive to say to them....wasn't he the one who encouraged Robert to "try again" because it's natural to get nervous in such situations?

As for the "weight issue", quotes can be edited in from other interviews....and as my granny always said: "Never trust a skinny chef!"
