(Keep in mind this is NBC's "official" release, and while it's nice, it's also slanted for the best possible spin)

‘AVERAGE JOE’ ACHIEVES THE HIGHEST 18-49 RATING FOR A REALITY SERIES PREMIERE SINCE LAST JANUARY’S ‘JOE MILLIONAIRE’

‘LAS VEGAS’ HITS ITS BEST REGULAR-SLOT NUMBERS TO DATE

‘FEAR FACTOR’ SCARES UP ITS HIGHEST REGULAR-SLOT 18-49 RATING SINCE MARCH

BURBANK, Calif. -- November 4, 2003 -- NBC’s hot new reality series “Average Joe” got off to a way-above-average start last night, improving by 45 percent on the network’s adult 18-49 average in the time period so far this season. It’s NBC’s highest in-season rating with regular programming in that hour since May 2002 and the highest result for a reality-show series premiere on any network since January 2003.

NBC also romped at 8 p.m. ET last night, as “Fear Factor” scored its highest regular-slot rating since March 24, and at 9 p.m. ET, as the season’s #1 new drama in 18-49, “Las Vegas,” hit its highest regular-slot rating to date.

According to preliminary “fast affiliate-based” in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research, the 10-11 p.m. ET premiere of “Average Joe” (5.8 rating, 15 share among adults 18-49, 11.1 million viewers overall) grabbed the highest 18-49 rating for a reality series premiere since Fox’s “Joe Millionare” bowed on Jan. 6, 2003.

Last night’s “Average Joe” achieved NBC’s highest rating in that time period this season and highest for regular in-season programming since May 13, 2002 (“Crossing Jordan” season finale). “Average Joe” won the highly competitive hour among adults 18-34 and women 18-34 (pending Nielsen updates of these provisional results). From its first half-hour to its second, “Average Joe” built its 18-49 rating by 0.7 of a point (to a 6.1/16 from a 5.4/13).

The 5.8 rating for “Average Joe” is a big gain over both NBC’s average 4.0 in the hour this season and 4.5 last season.

The only two new series to premiere this fall with higher 18-49 ratings than last night’s “Average Joe” were shows that benefitted from much higher lead-ins, NBC’s “Coupling” and CBS’ “Two and a Half Men.”

From 8-9 p.m. ET last night, an all-female edition of “Fear Factor” (6.1/16 18-49, 13.9 million viewers overall) attracted the show’s highest 8-9 p.m. results in 18-49 and total viewers since March 24. When Nielsen updates these preliminary numbers this afternoon, “Fear Factor” is expected to lead the time period in every key category with a towering winning margin of about 56 percent in 18-49 (the current margin over CBS’ comedies, expected to ultimately finish second in the hour). “Fear Factor” easily doubled Fox’s rival reality series “The Next Joe Millionaire” (6.1/16 vs. 2.6/7).

“Fear Factor” is the fastest-growing network reality series this fall versus year-ago 18-49 results. Heading into last night, “Fear Factor” is up 14 percent for the season in 18-49 (with a 5.6 rating versus last year’s 4.9) while ABC’s “The Bachelor” is down 6 percent (5.9 vs. 6.3) and CBS’ “Survivor” is down 12 percent (7.5 vs. 8.5). In overall total viewers, “Fear Factor” is up 15 percent (with 12.9 million viewers versus last year’s 11.2 million) while “The Bachelor” is down 6 percent (12.5 million vs. 13.3 million) and “Survivor” is down 5 percent (20.0 million vs. 21.1 million).

From 9-10 p.m. ET last night, “Las Vegas” (4.8/12 in 18-49, 11.7 million viewers overall) climbed to its highest numbers since a special 10 p.m. premiere telecast Sept. 22. The hot new drama is #1 in its highly competitive slot among women 18-34. “Las Vegas” continues to beat every 18-49 rating of every other first-year drama on the schedule this fall.

For the night, NBC is currently tied for #1 in 18-49. The Peacock is up 12 percent versus the same night last year in 18-49 while the other broadcast networks are all down.

Preliminary Nov. 3 nightlong 18-49 averages are: NBC, 5.6/14; CBS, 5.6/14; ABC, 5.2/13; Fox, 2.2/6; WB. 2.0/5; UPN, 1.5/4. Last night’s preliminary total viewer averages are: CBS, 16.3 million; ABC, 15.3 million; NBC, 12.2 million; WB, 6.1 million; Fox, 5.0 million; UPN, 3.6 million. Significant adjustments to these fast affiliate-based results are possible when Nielsen issues official national results this afternoon, particularly in the case of live telecasts such as ABC’s “Monday Night Football.”

Not surprising. It was the first episode. People were curious. I expect the number will drop off over the next two weeks.

As far as these dating shows go - and I watch them sporadically - I thought it had a good hook and it made me want to watch regularly. Especially for being on so late that's great news about the ratings.
