| Re: Trace Adkins - Country Music Star If you have ever seen anaphylaxis occur, you will understand how terrifying, scary, and how utterly helpless you are. Especially for children. See, when they experience a food allergy, one of the first things that happen is also the deadliest, its called epiglottitis, where the epiglottis, or the little flap that covers your esophagus when you breathe and your trachea when you eat, becomes inflamed due specifically to an antibody-antigen allergic reaction. And this happens in children. When this happens, the epiglottis inflames, thickens and literally solidifies over the trachea....so it becomes impossible, literally, to intubate, or to insert a tube into the trachea to ventilate the child. The only alternative is a tracheostomy...where a surgeon has to create a hole at the bottom of the neck and insert trach cannula and ventilate from that point. Once this occurs, they will have it for life, and usually there is a certain amount of brian damage that occurs when trachs are done just because how precious time factor is when a little body needs oxygen. So I know its kinda funny to think this charity is about peanut butter. Its not. Its about preventing one more child, teen, and adult from dying due to a reaction from food or medication, just simply because of an antigen-antibody reaction that occurs. Its a HUGE deal, Ok, im off my soap box now.

Couldnt have said it better ! The comment that it "only" might save one child was off base - if it was YOUR child that it saved you would be all up in arms to raise money for the charity. | |

| Re: Trace Adkins - Country Music Star I am not a big Country fan, but even I know of Trace and like some of his songs. He is a big star in country, really currently successful unlike many of the has beens on this show. I thought he really came off well, he was insightful in his "interviews" and seems to be pitching in to make his team win. I hope he goes far. |

| Re: Trace Adkins - Country Music Star I think this is a wonderful charity. I hadn't heard of it, but any organization that is researching allergies is a good thing. My husband is highly (anaphylaxis) allergic to chicken, turkey (likely all fowl meat, but who wants to test anything else), bananas, melons-- watermelons, cantelopes, etc., pumpkins and other gourds. He's so allergic to watermelons and bananas that if he even touches them his fingers will swell up. That means that we read every single lable. I had no idea how much stuff has chicken or chicken stock, chicken flavoring, etc. until I met him. And it's things you'd never think would have chicken in them at all i.e. Baked BBQ Lays potato chips has (at last check) chicken fat in it. Thankfully in the 15 years we've been married we've only been to the emergancy room one time. He also has other minor allergies that *only* cause an asthma attack, not anaphylaxis. With him it's pretty cut and dried as we know to ask, and he can tell if something is affecting him. I had a difficult time finding info on allergies though when my daughter was born. It's probably much easier now with the advances in the internet. But it's scary when you know that allergies can be somewhat hereditary and as a baby she wouldn't be able to tell us if it was hurting her. Due to the info I had at the time I nursed her exclusively for 8 months and personally didn't eat any of the stuff he was allergic to and then until she was 3 years old I didn't feed her any of the food. Now I think they recommend that the pregnant woman not eat the allergens. As a baby her doctor prescribed an epi pen for her just in case. Fortunately we never had to use that and she doesn't seem to have any allergies except a minor one to milk. She drinks rice milk, but we can cook with milk and she can eat cheese and other dairy products with no problem. It's a frightening feeling to be a mother and not know if she'll develop those allergies and I'm sure much more so if you know for sure that they do have them. Any research done is great and to me Trace is to be applauded for giving to a charity that is so close to home. He's giving his money and time to something that is important to him. Anytime you care about the problem you are more likely to want to invest more in it. Deaths occur from allergies and it's not less important than cancer just different. It's also a problem I believe that it only going to get worse unless we have the research to figure out what can trigger the allergies. |

| Re: Trace Adkins - Country Music Star Have never heard of his charity, however, this is a very serious issue. Food allergies do seem to be more common now than ever and they can be deadly. I have several friends who deal with this problem to varying degrees and with various food type items. The worst live with knowledge that the least little unknown ingredient could result in an unexpected trip to the ER, or death. And yes, these families do carry epinephrine and antihistamines every where they go, but sometimes that's not enough and they have to hit the ER. It's incredibly scary. While I can understand people questioning the need, I think we forget that there are many issues that need funding that fly way under the radar. I think this is a great way for this issue to get more attention, funding I'm sure it needs and publicity for it's very existence. Not a bad thing at all. Okay guys, you are really making me hate that in flipping back and forth between shows I managed to miss his commercial being aired. Sounds as if I missed a real treat. |
