Currently Active Users on front page

Question: Sometimes when I'm on the front index page of FoRT, I see the list of Currently Active Users. But not always, and I've wondered why sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. I've noticed a loose pattern the past few days where it sometimes seems to coincide with John appearing online in the mornings. It's during the late night/early morning hours I don't see it. Is this feature something that is a scheduled event during the day? Or is John a wizard in disguise hiding in my computer?

I can always see who is currently active on the non-index page, it's just the index page that it's inconsistent on. Not a big deal, but I am curious about how that works.
I live in my own world. But it's ok, they know me there.

John turns the Currently Active Users on and off depending on how many users there will be on the site, since removing it helps the site respond faster on busy nights. With Survivor and AI results tonight, it's probably going to be one, so it goes away for now.

Ahhhh, so it wasn't my imagination about it coinciding with John's signing on, lol. Do I get a cookie for my acute powers of observation?

    Thanks, Leo!

ETA: Wait, are you telling me that John isn't a wizard hiding in my computer?
