On Saturday, March 18, we're moving to a new service provider, and 2 shiny new servers.
The new servers will be the new Opteron technology, which will provide us with some performance increases over the Xeon we've got now. We'll also be using TWO servers: one for the database, and one for the web front end. Each will be optimized for its particular job.
These changes will allow us to effectively handle up to 2,000 or more users on the site at once, and will keep us from slowing down during heavy-use periods.
On Saturday, we'll be down for several hours, while we get things moved to the new servers. After that, there will be a period of time where the domain is moving over. This is a function of the internet itself, and I have no control over your individual "switch time". During the time that the domain hasn't changed for you, things will be noticeably slower.
I'll provide more details as we get closer, but I wanted to prepare everyone for several hours of downtime next weekend.
