    Re: POST of the Week!!

This slipped because of the server work, and I apologize. But, better late than never to recognize another great Post of the Week! This week, dpiranha makes a second appearance on this list, with a great post in the American Idol forum.

True, tonally he's been fine the past two weeks. Even if he'd sung every note on-key all the way through the competition, however, it's just wrong IMO to compare him favorably in any way, shape or form to the likes of gifted singers like Carrie Underwood and Bo Bice. Their infrequent errors came while working at a degree-of-difficulty level many cuts higher than where Sanjaya is currently toiling. It's like being at a driving range and seeing a 10-year-old kid with a bent 3-wood get one airborne and hit a 150-yard drive down the middle while Phil Mickelson in the next stall hooks a 340-yard rocket 20 feet left into the rough. One can't even assert seriously that for the one shot, the kid was better; it's not even close to being true. Honestly, there's that much of a difference in skill level between Sanjaya and Underwood.

    (2) I don't care much for VFTW any longer; it was a brilliant idea and a wonderful bit of e-protesting when it started. Unfortunately, they have become every inch the vapid famewhores as the folks at AI they were originally mocking so brilliantly, and their talent for inflated self-aggradizement now rivals Simon's.

Until this year's Finals, evidence was overwhelming that they had virtually no effect on the voting. With Stern's backing however, that's probably no longer the case; they might finally be reaching the 2%-3% of the voting electorate they need to affect the outcome reliably in these early stages. So I grudgingly give the VFTW founder credit; he's been determined to sabotage the voting for years, and he finally found an enabler who could allow him to reach a critical mass of henchmen to do his bidding. He must be quite full of himself today.

Having said that, it's quite understandable why they backed Sundance over Sanjaya early on. Sanjaya's vocals were earnest, but so thin and weak that it seemed he'd be just another nonentity to fade away during the semifinals. But, unexpectedly, he'd picked up a huge fan base during the audition and Hollywood week (in hindsight, those sincere tears for his sister when she was cut were, cynically speaking, a goldmine for him). As for Sundance, he was an early "chosen one"; AI had even used him in one of their "Is He The One" ad spots. But despite his excellent voice, he was collapsing and folding and, sorry to say, seemingly choking under the pressure of the competition. VFTW rightfully (if such a word can be used to apply to them) backed the singer who at the time was causing AI much the more embarrassment.

Sundance was at no point a worse singer, in terms of technical skill, than Sanjaya, but his performances were truly the "worst" that could happen to Simon Fuller & Co. Again, grudging props to VFTW for understanding that and choosing to back him.
