    Sluggish/unresponsive server

    Please note:

Today, we are experiencing some severe overhead due to the Novarg virus flooding our FORT mailsystem. Our mailscanner is catching it, of course, but it's taking a lot of server process to scan each incoming mail and tag it appropriately. Our current mail load is more than 7 times its normal load.

Short of shutting off e-mail, which I am reluctant to do, there's not much I can do to remedy the situation, and the server will probably remain a little sluggish throughout the day. I apologize in advance.

I may have taken care of the problem. Apparently, the mail service had a lock on the weblog and wasn't letting it go. Rebooting seems to have released the lock, and things are much better.

Oddly, the PID that held the lock didn't exist.

I don't believe that was English, John, but I agree things seem better.

Also, thanks for moving the "parent links" too.

Well, for the second day in a row, we've had the logfile lock situation. I'll try to get that cleared up, so I can stop rebooting the system in the morning.

    a couple things I love:

    1) The fact that John does know what he's talking about
    2) the fact that I am not alone in my not understanding
    3) the fact that I can now say this: "Apparently, the mail service had a lock on the weblog and wasn't letting it go. Rebooting seems to have released the lock, and things are much better. Oddly, the PID that held the lock didn't exist." In conversation in public and laugh when I get home for the fact that now someone in town thinks I know what the hell I'm talking about
