Pictures one day, red X the next day

On the Hottest Men thread (p. 133) I posted 4 pics and we all saw them yesterday. Today, one person only sees red Xs and I see 2 red Xs and 2 pics instead of four. I didn't change a thing. What happened and how can that be prevented?

The place that hosts the images you posted may be actively trying to prevent "hot-linking", and they'll rename or remove images that are linked and sucking up their bandwidth (I do the same thing here). In that case, you'll get red X's. The ones who still see them have them in their cache that hasn't updated yet.

I just wanted to make FORT a beautiful place to see. John, how can I tell which pics aren't supposed to be used so I don't use them? When I try to copy some pics all I get is an X and I leave it alone.

Unfortunately, you really can't tell. Some places like Geocities, prevent it from happening immediately. Others do it when they notice it in their logs (like me). So it might work for a while and then not.

But most places don't like hot-linking.

Some sites have the picture/gif/or whatever you're hot-linking to show up saying, "THIS PICTURE WAS STOLEN FROM XYZ.COM", instead of the picture you were trying to get.

Most (if not all now) sites say something about taking pictures at the very bottom of thier homepage eldee. Some places want you to take the pictures cause it'll have "XYZ.COM" somewhere on the picture and it serves as advertising for them.
It's pretty hit and miss regardless.
All things beautiful do not have to be full of color to be noticed; in
life that which is unnoticed has the most power.
