As Tyra Banks told this week's TV Guide magazine: "I don't approve of women being divas, especially if you haven't made it yet." Yes, Robin Manning, the slinky hostess of America's Next Top Model meant you. A 27-year-old ex-beauty queen, Manning was exiled this week for a litany of sins, including excessive Bible thumping and refusal to do a photo shoot au naturel. Here, she tries explaining herself to TV Guide Online.
TV Guide Online: Did you mind being labeled "plus-size"?
Robin: They said, "She's not big enough to be plus-sized, but she's too big to do runway." High fashion is from size zero to a four. A four is considered fat! I'm a six and sometimes eight. I guess I would be considered plus-sized.
TVGO: We've heard from others on your religious issues with Ebony's girlfriend visiting. Why did you care?
Robin: In that episode with Ebony, if people listened to everything we said, I say, "I don't agree with homosexual and gay relationships, but at the same time, I cannot judge." I actually stated that and I'm glad they didn't edit that out. I was not being judgmental. Do I have certain views on things? Sure, I do. But do I judge people? No. I'm sorry people felt that way.
TVGO: Since so many gay professionals work in fashion, wouldn't it make business sense to keep your mouth shut about gays, since you need their help to build your career? The show's about modeling, after all, not voicing your political views.
Robin: No, because I didn't judge them. It's like if you ask me, how do I feel about a person being a racist. I don't agree with it, but I can't judge them. Just because I don't agree with a lifestyle doesn't mean I can't be respectful to that person. With Ebony... we didn't have a conflict. Ebony and I have sat down and talked. She even got on some Internet message board and said, "Robin and Shannon did go in to meet my girlfriend," because we wanted to see who this person was that made Ebony happy. She was always tense, so to see that softer side of her made me happy.
TVGO: Why did you flash your chest at Jay the make-up artist?
Robin: (Laughs) This is the 100th time I'll explain this. But it's okay! The blouse I was wearing was a see-through shirt, with flowers covering the nipples. Jay thought I was not going to wear it, so I opened the curtain to show him. But it was missing a button and my boobs popped out! I was like, "Oh, my word," and I apologized to Mr. Jay. He knew it was an accident. They turned an innocent accident into more than what it was.
TVGO: Why did you refuse to do this week's nude photo shoot?
Robin: The highest paid model, Gisele Bundchen, does not do nude photos. She will wear risqué outfits, but she does not do nudes and she makes over $15,000 an hour. So you don't have to pose nude in order to be a top model, and that's the message I want to convey to young girls. I don't want them to feel that's what you have to do to make it in this world.
TVGO: Why were you always reading the Bible, even while riding in that limo in Paris?
Robin: (Sighs) Once again, it's called creative editing. It looks better to see Robin read the Bible for four hours... Really, the conversation with the Frenchmen in the limousine got really raunchy. They were talking about sex shops and stuff like that. I just whipped out my Bible and started reading.
TVGO: Um, so you just happened to have the good book handy?
Robin: Yeah, I have a little pocket bible and I don't see anything wrong with it. Whenever I have a free moment, honey, I just whip out the Word and see how that can help get me through the day. That's the reason I pulled it out in the limo with those guys. They turned me off.
