    Ruben Studdard is Hospitalized

From Entertainment Weekly. Link to article here.

    American Idled

Ruben Studdard is hospitalized for exhaustion. The ''Idol'' champ, who recently went off his diet, will have to miss several performances and promotional appearances by Gary Susman

Ruben Studdard's new album, released Tuesday, is called I Need an Angel, but what the crooner really needs is some rest. So said J Records spokeswoman Liz Morentin, who said in a statement that the 26-year-old American Idol champ had been hospitalized for exhaustion Monday night in his hometown of Birmingham, Ala. Studdard, who last week taped a Christmas special with fellow Idol winners Kelly Clarkson and Fantasia Barrino (it airs Wednesday night on Fox), will be sidelined for at least the rest of the week. That will force him to miss several promotional opportunities, during a crucial shopping week, to plug his new release, including concerts on Nov. 26 and 27 in Atlantic City, which Morentin says will be rescheduled.

The Velvet Teddy Bear, who weighs in these days at 449 pounds, recently announced that he was going off his televised diet, after losing 12 pounds, because his schedule didn't permit him to meet with a nurse every day as the diet required. (TV's Extra had planned to chronicle his weight loss.) He said he would try a home-delivery meal plan instead and work out with a personal trainer.

Ruben's Idol runner-up, Clay Aiken, has also been plagued with health woes at a time when he has projects to promote (his book Learning to Sing: Hearing the Music in Your Life and his holiday album Merry Christmas with Love). Citing a sinus infection, he postponed the first three dates of his Joyful Noise tour, which will now begin on Nov. 26 in Costa Mesa, Calif. Aiken also found time recently to tape a holiday special, A Clay Aiken Christmas, which airs Dec. 8 on NBC.

He should look into gastric bypass while he's there. That's one talented man and I hate to lose that beautiful voice because of weight problems.

    Studdard Hospitalized for Exhaustion

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken, the top two performers from the second season of FOX's "American Idol," appear to be working too hard. Just days after Aiken had to delay the start of his Joyful Noise holiday tour due a variety of health problems, Studdard check into a Birmingham, Ala. hospital with exhaustion.
Some media reports are claiming that the show's second winner has pneumonia, though the AP is stating that Studdard was feeling ill on Monday (Nov. 22), but that pending further test results, the cause of the hospitalization was exhaustion.

Studdard's gospel-themed "I Need an Angel" hit record stores on Tuesday and Studdard was scheduled to perform at a concert before the Thanksgiving Day football game between Alabama State and Tuskegee, but that appearance has been cancelled.

The plus-sized crooner, whose weight reportedly ballooned to an estimated 450 pounds in the year after his "Idol" win, was doing a low-carb, low-cal diet earlier in the month. Studdard allowed "Extra" to follow him on the diet, though there were rumors that the singer ditched the eating routine. In recent interviews, Studdard discussed his eagerness to spend Thanksgiving eating home cooked meals.
"Soulful," Studdard's first solo album, debuted at No. 1 last December.

Aiken, runner-up to Studdard in 2003, had to eliminate tour dates in Pasadena, El Cajon, Calif. and Phoenix due to damaged vocal chords brought on by ear and sinus infections. Aiken's activities include promoting his autobiography, plugging for his new Christmas album and several Christmas specials, including one for NBC.
