That has never been lost by me or most of his fans. That's what, besides his voice, attracted us to him. It's the all American Story.
That's what we're doing here. Living the all American Dream! Small town makes it big!

This is definitely a different sound from him. I almost wasn't sure it was him at first.

About Clay

I'm actually nanners/Tara's sister, but she said I could post this here.

--

It's not necessarily how I make a difference, but I want to make sure that I do. - Clay Aiken

I never thought I'd be a fan of American Idol. Seeing Keith audition only cemented what I already thought I knew about the show. It was a joke. So I definitely didn't think I would end up supporting any one competitor as much as I support Clay Aiken.

Being in choir for eight years, and voice lessons for half a year, I have learned certain things about vocal technique, and when I was flipping channels at my grandma's house, over Spring Break and heard Clay sing- I heard everything I had learned being put into practice beautifully. Even though it was only the recap clip at the end of the show, I was totally impressed.

A few days later, I came in only to hear this familiar country song playing on our computer. "Is that Colin Raye?" I asked, remembering the original artist. My sister cracked up and told me 'No, it wasn't. But did I remember Clay Aiken from American Idol? It's him.'

So that's what got me at first. The voice. I am a self-confessed choir geek, and I love good vocal technique. Slowly, I started to learn more about Clay. My sister prowled the websites and I remained relatively unaffected by him as a person until I learned that we shared the same major. Special Education.

When I went to Costa Rica in 2001, I met a little boy named Julio. Julio made a place in my heart instantly, and I knew upon coming back from Costa Rica that I wanted to help kids like him, be as successful as they could be. That fall, I transfered to the university I'm currently attending and declared my major. Special Education- specifically with children who have developmental delays like Julio had.

I learned that through Clay's work at the YMCA he had worked with a number of children with special needs, and that sparked an interest in him to pursue it as a major. Newspaper articles from his homestate identify specific instances where he worked one-on-one (on seperate occassions) with two teenage boys with autism- one article specifically stands out in my mind, as the mother of one of the boys said that Clay helped him learn to do things like shower and shop. Clay was patient, but firm while working with them, and would often spontaneously burst into song if music was mentioned.

Recently, in one of my classes, the mother of a child with autism came to speak to my class. She mentioned that teaching people with autism can be very tedious, as they often can't mimic a behavior. For example, if you want to teach them a skill such as washing their hands, it has to be broken down into steps, and the steps have to be practiced. One day you work on using the soap. The next day you work on drying your hands. So the big things need to be broken down, and it indeed takes patience and a willing, easy-going demeanor to accomplish teaching even the simplest tasks to a child with autism. The fact that Clay not only performed his job, but did it in such a way that the families he worked with grew to consider him one of their own is commendable.

Clay is not the type who will let himself be walked all over. Though he is a Christian, raised in the South he also knows how to stand up for himself and will not hesitate to do so. As judge Paula Abdul has mentioned, he has a quiet self-assurance about him. Even when he came in at the Atlanta auditions and no one knew what to make of him with his stereotypical geek look, he told Simon and Randy "I'm the American Idol" and that they had some good talent last season but "as far as the top ten goes, he could've been up there." He told them they should let him through and then leave it up to America to decide if he was good enough to advance. No coincidence that he was the wild card America chose.

He has sarcastic sense of humor, which I can totally identify with, as that is how my mom and sister and I are. In an interview with the Jaded Journalist, Clay barely blinked as the quirky interviewer stacked chairs and sat on them, as the tower got higher and higher, all the while trying to get a reaction out of Clay. (I have a feeling Clay's seen it all, in working with as many kids as he has.) And when he started ripping on Clay's Gladys-Knight-proclaimed "magical" look, he immediately jumped to his own defense, in his own fun-spirited way. As the interviewer pushed on, asking if Clay thought that the interviewer was justified in making all the remarks about Clay's looks because the interviewer was so handsome, Clay answers quietly, "I don't see how, really. Because you're not, really." And telling him that "You need a bag, over the head, I think. That would help a little bit."

He let kids duct tape him to the wall at the YMCA, and proudly proclaims that his most unique talent is the ability to turn both feet around backwards and seems to offer to show anyone who is interested. Though he does warn that it'll make them sick

Clay has the most open and inviting face while singing, and takes criticsm like a pro. He never assumes he's safe, and always thanks everyone- even the judges- and even if they told him his performance was terrible. His respect for them remains high, despite comments made, and his sense of humor is intact regardless. He loves the other competitors, and is shaken when they leave. He's afraid of the pool they have at the house, but animatedly tells his housemates about the pig roasts they have back home. Clay went into the audition thinking there was no possible way for him to win, so he went in and just had fun. He waited to hear if he was part of the Top 32, and became convinced he was in the room that would be elimintated.

Clay's voice isn't perfect, neither is his look. I realize his character, though admirable, has flaws. However, I have grown to deeply respect him not only as a performer, but as a human being. His dedication to his job prior to American Idol has reminded me why I first got involved in the major, and has quelled any doubts that I should continue pursuing it. Clay's humility and graciousness under pressure remind me how we are called to live. That it's not about being served, but it's about serving and giving of ourselves. And I am so glad that Clay took a chance and is following his dream. He gives me confidence that I can pursue my own and be successful at it- and that even if my aspirations to be a writer don't work out...there's more to life.

So Clay, thank you for reminding me that it's not necessarily how I make a difference, just that I make one.

Thank you, nanner's sister, for changing the subject back to Clay. It's nice to read a positive post for a change.

Let's hope that they all do well Tuesday and we can get back to talking about the show.

Did anyone listen to the Hold me, thrill me, kiss me song at the TWOP site? The link was a few pages back. It was wonderful
