| Just thought I'd share the odd jist of the phone conversation with my Mother the other day.....apparently my Mom wants me to bring home a guy just like Bo, either that or she wants him for herself! She kept going on and on about how sexy he was and how she was hoping that they don't end up trying to remake his look cause he's perfect just the way he is, although she says she could live without the soul patch beneath his lips. Who was this? My Mother? She's much more likely to want me to bring home a "nice" guy looking more along the lines of Anthony Federov (who she says she actually likes as well cause he reminds her of the kids she met in Romania a couple of years ago on her mission trip). It's not really strange that my Mom and I like the same AI competitors, that's normal...but she's actually voting each week and seems to have on crush on Bo? That's not my Momma and it's actually funny as all get out to hear her raving on and aon about him. | |

Bo's look wasn't exactly proper or even cool in your (and my) mom's generation! Seems like her tastes have evolved over the years. ![]() PS, Libra, I could live without the soul patch, too. I've always kind of thought of them sort of as blemishes on othewise perfectly good faces. (But a diamond isn't ruined by one little 'flaw'.) ![]()

| That Bo has just got it going on!! He has natural talent, sings songs instinctively well, and I think is one of those musicians who can just hear the perfect pitch. He performs well, works the stage, and to me is just the best one up there. He ought to win this thing hands down.

| Article from Birmingham News , 3/14/05: http://www.al.com/search/index.ssf?/...hamnews?emusic The Bice Squad keeps tabs on `Idol' contestant Tuesday, March 15, 2005 MARY COLURSO News staff writer The Rev. Donny Acton - just doing his job - looked at Bo Bice and asked one very important question. "Got any songs about God?" Acton said. "Yeah, man," Bice responded. That was pretty much all it took for Acton to recruit Bice for a gig at New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church. It was fall 2003, and Acton, the church's senior pastor, had gotten to know and like a certain long-haired clerk at the Guitar Gallery in Pelham. "He's a cool guy, friendly as they come," Acton says. "And we love people when they come in." Acton, 44, who plays guitar in New Hope's praise and worship band, thought his music-minded congregation would appreciate Bice's talent - and so it came to pass. "He did it and got a standing O," Acton says. "I embraced him." Now Bice, 29, is part of the flock at the church on Cahaba Valley Road, baptized there in April 2004. He's also been a regular performer at its 11 a.m. services on Sundays. "We're Bo's backup band," Acton says, laughing. "I told him to come on back when he gets tired of playing with those amateurs." "Those amateurs," of course, are the studio musicians on "American Idol," a top-rated reality series on the Fox network. Bice, a Helena resident, is one of 12 finalists on the show, gaining fame each week for his singing abilities and competing for a major-label recording contract. The next episode of "Idol" will be broadcast live at 7 p.m. today; results of viewer voting will be announced at 8 p.m. Wednesday. For about two months, Bice has been living with other contestants in Los Angeles, an entire continent away from the church he calls home. But he hasn't forgotten New Hope, nor has the church forsaken him. "My church is a big part of the reason I can handle what goes on here," Bice says. "I don't think I would have been mentally, spiritually or physically ready for this show 10 years ago, or even five years ago." Contestants on "Idol" work long and hard preparing for each week's programs. Bice calls the schedule unexpectedly "grueling," and says 17-hour days are commonplace. He credits New Hope with helping him to summon the peace and stability needed to face such challenges, and - without being specific - says the church helped him to mend his previously wild ways. "I lived the rock life," Bice says. "I was lucky enough to get out of that three years ago." At least once, Acton says, Bice has been spotted silently mouthing the words, "I love you, New Hope" when the camera flashed on him in the "Idol" waiting room. `Bo-focused night': The church, for its part, has declared its congregation "the Bice Squad" and organized weekly viewing parties complete with big screens, cheering sections and souvenir buttons. The public is welcome to attend, Acton says. Although previously held on Mondays, the gatherings have switched to Tuesdays for the next phase of the competition. "It's a Bo-focused night," Acton explains. "We sit there and wait for Bo. During the commercials, we get up and tell Bo stories. We may mercy clap for everyone else, but that's it. We figure Bo's won it." Because Bice lost his job at the Guitar Gallery when "Idol" came calling, the church has taken up collections to help him pay his mortgage and other expenses. Also, Acton says, New Hope has offered moral support to Bice's girlfriend during his absence. "She's at home taking care of my three dogs, two cats and two aquatic turtles," Bice confirms. He and Acton decline to reveal the woman's name, however, saying they want to protect her privacy. Along with Bice's mother, Nancy Downes, members of the New Hope Bice Squad are planning to fly to Hollywood in the weeks to come, so they can loudly root for their hometown hero on national television. And if "American Idol" wants to send a documentary crew to the church, trailing Bice during a quick trip home? "Oh, yes, we'll do that," Acton says. "When Bo comes back to Birmingham, he'll splash down hard." E-mail: mcolurso@bhamnews.com |

| He really should win this thing. What gets me is the rich quality of his voice - so deep and full, combined with his confidence on stage. And to top it all off, apparently he's this really great guy, who seems truly humble. This is the only AI contestant of any season where I could actually see myself purchasing his music/album after the show.

Ding! Ding! Ding! *sirens, whistles and lights going off* I was thinking the exact same thing. I can do without the sugary pop ballads, but I would actually buy a Bo album.

| Am I the only one who didn't think his voice sounded as good last night? I'm still a fan, though. |
