| American Idol, Top 7 Results: Here's To You, Mr. Robinson Ryan opens tonight’s show by announcing, “It’s time to find out what you’ve done.” After the normal opening, Ryan introduces our three <s>stooges</s> judges and we then say hello to our remaining seven finalists. Bo Bice then introduces a video segment all about Ryan getting a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. Ryan feigns surprise, but you know he had to have known about this in advance. We see bits of interviews with the show’s producers, who recite the expected canned speeches about how they’re so glad for Ryan and proud of him blah blah blah, and then we’re back to the live show. All in all, it’s about five minutes of my life I’ll never get back. Anyway, Ryan tells us that it’s time for our requisite group number. This time, the group will be singing a song written especially for them by renowned songwriter John Farrar! Um, who? Well, it seems that John wrote many of Olivia Newton-John’s later hits, and I’m suddenly overtaken by this image of Bo in spandex singing, “Let’s get physical…physical…I wanna get physicaaaaaaaaaaaaaal…let’s get into physical. Let me hear your body talk…your body talk…” (Where is that brain bleach when you need it?) The song is a sappy ballad called “You Can Shine”, and the performance is pretty predictable. What is different about it, though, is that we get to see some of our finalists playing musical instruments. Yes, Bo and Carrie are playing guitars during the number, and Anwar is playing the piano. As for the others (Vonzell, Constantine, Anthony, and Scott), they make do with their vocals, and I notice that, in spite of the cheesy lyrics, Constantine and Carrie sound particularly good. The number ends, and we go to our first commercial break of the evening. We come back from the break, and it is time for the obligatory Ford music video/commercial. This one’s done to the Stray Cats’ “Rock This Town”, and, while it’s not the worst one I’ve ever seen, it won’t win any awards for creativity, either. We come back from that video piece, and Ryan take us right into another video segment. This time, it’s the recap of the previous night’s performances. Once that is done, it is time to get to the results. Ryan says that he’s going to call everyone down into two groups. He starts separating our finalists, and we soon have Vonzell and Constantine on one side of the stage, while Anthony and Anwar are on the other side. We still have three finalists to place, and Ryan tells us we’ll find out which groups they join…(say it with me now)…right after the break. We’re back after the commercial break, and it is time to finish dividing up the finalists. Ryan asks Carrie to join Vonzell and Constantine, so I immediately figure this is the “safe” group. He then puts Scott with Anwar and Anthony. But, that still leaves Bo on the couch. What about him? Well, Ryan informs Bo that he is safe (big surprise there), and his fans (both in the studio and at home in front of their television sets) cheer and squeal with delight. Ryan then asks Bo to get up off the Couch Of Safety and join the group that he thinks is the top group. Uh oh…it’s the George Huff incident from last season all over again. Anyway, Bo, a bit apprehensive, gets up off the couch and makes his way towards the two groups. Which one does he join? Neither, actually. Rather, he confidently stands in between the two groups, much to the surprise and delight of the audience. (Surprise? Oh, come on. You knew he was going to do something like that.) Anyway, Ryan says that we’ll put an end to all of this and find out who is staying and who is going home—when?—right after the break. We return from our last commercial interlude of the evening (hallelujah), and Ryan announces that Anthony, Anwar, and Scott are this week’s Bottom Three. (I have to say that’s really not a surprise to me.) As Vonzell, Constantine, Carrie, and Bo make their way back to the Couch Of Safety, Ryan asks Paula what she thinks about this week’s results. Paula give her canned response about how they’re all winners at this point and how she thinks they’ll all be able to get record deals and she just doesn’t know what happened this week blah blah blah. Then, without further ado, it is time to get to the results. Ryan asks Scott and Anthony to step forward. He hesitates (for dramatic effect, dontcha know) and then tells them they can return to the couch to join the others. That means that the person being sent home this week is Anwar Robinson. We see the requisite video tribute, and then Ryan asks Anwar to sing “September” one more time. Anwar obliges, and that brings the show to a close. Although I’m a bit surprised to see Anwar going home before some of the remaining contestants (namely, Scott), I have to also say that his performance this week was definitely not up to the level of some of his earlier ones. So, it’s not a complete shock to see him leaving the show this week. Who will be the contestant to follow Anwar out the door? Tune in next week to find out!
